a7n8x question - going to xp2400

i just put together a new system. this will be my first attempt at overclocking. specs are : a7n8x dlx , 1gb corsair 3200 (2 512's) , xp2100, sapphire 9500 128, 80gb wd se, win xp pro sp1. everytime i have tried to adjust the memory or processor speeds it will not boot. right now my memory is running 133mhz (all default bios settings) - should the fsb jumper be set to 200 or left on the default 333/266? i do not know which revision 2100 i have - i would assume 'a' since i picked that up early january. i would appreciate any input. thanks.

edit:

ok - thanks for the help - decided to go with the 2400 - now so i dont mess this up again... where is a good place to buy? and are there different 'flavors' of the 2400 like the 21? i just went with the recommendation of a friend to get the 2100. instead of asking for additional input. ( that will teach me to spend all of my time in hotdeals.) thanks again guys

on a side note mechBgon - with your very useful info i looked into your sig - and am now running team anandtech seti.

You can determine the type of your processor by appearance, here's a link showing the Thoroughbreds versus Palominos (there are 2100+'s in both flavors): Thoroughbred has the black label at the edge, Palomino doesn't While you're looking, also note the code on the CPU and you can tell if it's a Tbred-A or Tbred-B with reference to this article at Overclockers.com.

First things I would do, if you haven't already, is replace the mobo battery and flash to the latest BIOS if you've got one of the 1001-series BIOSes. The jumper should be on the 266/333 setting as you've had it. You should go into the BIOS, manually set the AGP to 66MHz and manually set the other timings as well, don't leave anything on "Optimal." That should get it to OC for you. Good luck with the new rig! 😀

If you dont' want to go through the horror of taking out the mobo and HSF i'd recommedn using WPUID and examing the stepping.
TBRed A = 680
Tbred B = 681
GL.

Leave the jumper on the 333/266 position.

Second, flash to the latest BIOS, 1002 Final. It sounds like you might have one of the earlier ones that really don't like tinkering.

That should get you going 😀

well, looks like i bought myself a palomino.😱
judging from what i've seen - this appears to be the wrong processor.
any ideas ? should i check the hotdeals forum for a t-bred ? and if yes
is 2100 the way to go or should i move up to 2400 (i really dont want to
spend more than 150 - my wife is ready to shoot me now...)
thanks for the advice.

as far as cooling any thoughts on the slk800(a) - newegg pictures it with silver grease tube. is this the same as arctic silver? or should i stick with the name brand.
and last question - is there a preferred fan to use with it ? i've seen a few people reference panaflo. sorry if i sound inept - all of the other systems i have put together were totally stock - this one i would like to overclock.

I would get the slk-800 and an 80mm ys-tech variable speed fan from SVC.com (great prices and super fast shipping - nothing against NewEgg) along with some Arctic Silver 3.
