k, had the board in my old case, transfered it to my new case and would not boot. it would load up, state "system fail due to memory" or something like that. tried ever consiberalbe combinations with my two sticks of ram (corsair pc2700 twin sticks, each 256meg) and a friends ram (crucial pc2700 512meg). i thought board got damaged somehow, RMA'd board, got new board (rev. 1.06 board), tried my ram, again, system failure due to memory. is it my ram? i know before when it was working, i would get random system failures due to memory, but would still boot up and run fine with no performance hit. i know this board has had problems with all crucial and corsair pc3200, but nothing about pc2700. is it my ram? only new thing i added was a power supply, a antec trublue 480watt. i've tried booting with the old ps, but still no go.

system:
asus a7n8x del (rev. 1.06
amd1700+ with stock HS
Corsair pc2700ll twinpack (512meg total, 256meg each)
Antec TrueBlue 480watt
Maxtor 40gig/2meg cache HDD

P.S. i've tried resettign bois, no go. the previous board (rev. 1.04) had 1002 bois, don't know what the new board has (rev. 1.06) has, i don't even get that far before auto shutdown. it runs for 5 seconds total, doesn't even finish "memory" when tryin to POST.

If the board does an auto-shutdown, the most likely three reasons are

1) The new case's power button is internally stuck in the "pushed" position and so the board thinks "oh, he's holding down the Power button, that's my signal to turn off"

2) Your heatsink isn't making flat contact with the CPU core for some reason (usually the heatsink's reversed) or the heat isn't being transfered to the heatsink well for some other reason (for instance, if you tried re-using the stock thermal pad... it's a one-use-only pad)

3) The board is shorting out on the new case somewhere, perhaps due to extra standoffs under the motherboard.

Hope that helps, good luck with the troubleshooting :D First step I'd take is to pull the board out of the new case, check that the heatsink's on in the correct direction (stepped end of the heatsink base toward the DIMM slots, in your particular case), and then try powering it up by tripping the Power Button pins with a screwdriver tip.

Or the cpu fan is not plugged into the correct header.....

This board has issues with Crucial Pc2700 512mb sticks. I know I had to RMA my crucial back when I got random reboots on my A7N8x Deluxe board. PC 3200 should be fine, I would suggest using the Corsair or try TwinMos if you want to use the 512mb sticks (lower cost and great performance). TwinMos\winbond chips is also a recommended memory for this board.

I thought nforce boards were known for having problems with 2700 RAM. I avoided that because of it and am running generic 2100 on teh same board. Maybe try some 2100 or 3200.

PC2700 memory is fine, it's just some of the 512mb pc2700 sticks, like Crucial, that don't work. My 2 x 256MB Samsung pc2700 works great at 200MHz fsb (and its for sale!).

i know they have/had (i *believe* resolved with the newest bois) seriuos issues with pc3200 (400mhz) corsair, but heard nothing for 2700's.

mechBgon, thank you very much for the info. i'm sure its not power switch, sure its not shorted, but not sure about the thermal pad. i noticed that, but didn't think it would hurt anything. the HS was orginaly on my 900mhz tbird, when i got the new board and cpu, i switch over including the HS to the newer 1.47tbred and ran fine for the most part. i am purchasing a new HS tommorrow to test this theory. thanks for the suggestion.

i had a problem with this board.

i looked closely at it and discovered that one of the capacitors had been damaged by the clip on the hs. :(

You could try something Asus tech support told me to do, even though my problem was different. It didn't help me (fixed it another way) but it may help you.

They said to take out the mobo, and put electrical tape over all the standoffs. Then poke a hole where the screws go into the standoffs. Put the mobo back in and screw it in with the electrical tape between the mobo and the standoffs to prevent shorts.
