About 8-10 months agoI built a PC for a friend using thie A7N8X Delux motherboard.
Recently, he added a new USB printer, and after following the install instructions, perfectly, it did not show up in the print manager.
He pluged into a different USB port and now it shows up.
Are all of the USB ports, on this board, supposed to be USB 2 or is there a second controller that is USB 1?
This ma sound lake a silly question, but I am curious why the printer would not show up when plugged into one port, but does show up on a different port.
Thanks for any clarification,

All 6 USB ports on the A7N8X Deluxe are USB 2.0

Did he plug the printer directly into the computer or did he use a hub when connecting the printer? You must use a USB 2.0 hub with USB 2.0 devices otherwise the rates will fall back to USB 1.1 standards.

I've had funny situations like that too. My cell phone's data cable didn't work properly in one USB port, tried another one and it works fine. *shrugs*

A7N8X Deluxe as well.

Yes, the printer was plugged directly into the motherboard USB port, not into an external hub.

I have the same board. When I plug in my only usb 2.0 device a scanner into my front usb ports I get a popup that says unknown device plugged in. When I plug it into one of the rear ports it detects fine as a scanner.

The funny thing is I can plug in my usb drive into either of the front ports and they work fine. They aren't usb 2.0 but it is funny none the less. My front ports aren't usb 2.0 compatible but you would think it would detect it correctly and just not run using the higher bandwidth.

It's not an issue with your motherboard. It's an issue with your case. Companies like Antec will ship you a replacement front ports which are USB 2.0 compatible.

I had the same problem, but got my replacement ports and it's all good.

I know the front ports are 1.1. I thought that if the ports are only 1.1 the scanner should be recognized and only run at 1.1 speeds. Maybe that is not the case.

Anyhow I have a off brand case actually I don't even remember the name. I will have to go back to newegg and see if I can find a name and look into it a little deeper. I don't have any other usb 2.0 devices at the moment so I am not too worried about upgrading. I have the scanner in the back permanantly now.

Thanks wobble.

With the system that I am asking about in this thread, the ports in question are all rear, onboard ports.

Go figure.............

As stated earlier all ports on that board are 2.0. The one you hook to the front depends on what you have for the case.

Maybe you have one of the ports in the back that isn't working. Do you have a different device that you can plug into that port to verify?

I find a lot of my usb stuff is flakey. I keep my scanner plugged in all the time but when I go to use it I have to pull the power cord and sometimes the usb cable to get it to work. I assume this has to do with power savings more than anything else. But The printer I have on the kids computer has to be turned off then back on just about every time they want to use it. When it was on my computer I never had to do this. Weird.

The port speed is detected and set according to the requirements of the device you plug in, at the moment of plugging it in, and by nothing else. Things like using a lower-than-intended speed, e.g. for a port whose cabling is known to be poor, are not even possible.

The other frequent problem is that there are many USB powered devices that draw WAY too much power. 500 mA is allowed, stuff like scanners draws up to twice that. If a mainboard's port is designed by the book, power to that port will be cut off to protect the mainboard circuitry. Powered hubs are usually more tolerant to overly thirsty USB-powered devices.
