Just switched over to a A7N8X from a EPoX 8K3A. I can't get DMA enabled on the DVD... it works on my HD and my CDRW but not my DVD... I know it DOES have DMA because it worked on my 8K3A... the biggest issue is it wont rip CDs to MP3 faster then 8X because it pins CPU usage at 100% with PIO mode... it used to do 30x in DMA mode. I have gone into the IDE controller and set it to use DMA if possible... it just wont use it.

I've had the same exact problem with my rig. I can't get my DVD's DMA enabled so it won't play any DVDs. It plays CDs just fine though. Very weird indeed.

The weirdest thing is, when I had Windows 98 SE, everything worked perfectly. When I upgraded to Win 2K Pro, that's when I couldn't play any DVDs. I formatted, but the problem is still there. I have no idea how to enable DMA on this thing. It should be DMA 66. I tried many different DVD softwares too.

My spec:

AXP 2000+
Gigabyte GA-7VRXP
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB
Western Digital "SE" 80GB
PNY GeForce3 Ti200
Pioneer 16X Slot-Load DVD-ROM
SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer

Try putting the DVD drive on a IDE cable with no other devices. I'd be curious to hear if you can enable DMA after doing that.

I do think it's a software problem, because my DVD-ROM worked with Win 98 SE. I do have the DVD-ROM connected to its own IDE cable with nothing else on it.

I tried installing different 4in1 drivers and the earlier drivers let me watch DVDs with my DVD-ROM. However, it is very slow. When I first put the DVD in, the DVD menu comes up soooooo dang slow. It skips every second and it's not the DVD, because I've tried many different DVDs on it. The movie plays fine once I get to click on the Play button, but every time I pause, it will start lagging again. It's very weird. I pulled out my brother's LG 12X DVD-ROM and tried it on mine and it still gives me the same problem. I don't know what the heck is going on...

Please HELP!!!

I have an unorthodox suggestion for your rig, IQJUMPuw. Try disabling your 7VRXP's USB 2.0 controller. According to page 46 of the manual, that's under the Integrated Peripherals menu of the BIOS. I suggest trying this because the PCI USB 2.0 controller on my A7V333-R bogs down my PCI bus quite a bit... easy to try, anyway. Good luck! :D

Fixed it.... I made my swapped my DVD and CDRW jumpers to make the DVD slave and CDRW master... both now have DMA.

Hmmm.. ok the USB 2.0 is disabled in the BIOS. It always have been.

Mine still doesn't work. My DVD-ROM is connected as a primary master. Should I change that?

You can also remove the drives under Device manager, reboot, and have Windows reinstall it. That's what basically happened with your solution. Windows had to rescan and reinstall them.

Thats not what happened with me, I tried that and everything else, no matter what it wouldnt work with the DVD as master and CDRW as slave... only reversed.

Can I set my DVD-ROM as a Primary Slave instead of Primary Master even though I only have one device connected to the IDE cable?

I have my two IDE hard drives as Secondary Master and Slave.
