a7n8x 2500+amd, yet ALL GAMES CRASH! please help

All bios settings set to original, non overclocked settings...

There is an issue with the ati radeon 9600Pro running both jedi knight 2 (latest
patch) and UT2003 (latest patch) that seem to crash my system after a few
minutes of game play, there are no graphic errors or glitches visible. After
maybe two or three minutes the system locks (the last rendered frame remains visible) and a sound loop of the last action
repeats (such as gun fire, etc.)

****Originally, my system failed to run properly (after a few minutes the system
would crash when hitting a tab in windows or moving my mouse, etc... then reboot
saying "system has recovered from a serious error, the system has detected that
"ati radeon 9600" is the cause of this failure...with the pre-flased mobo of
the asus a7n8x delux..

After flashing my mobo and getting the latest catalyst drivers, this problem was
fixed, now however after running any 3d based game, it locks up after a few
minutes of gaming... what should i do???

here are my system specs:

a7n8x delux mobo

512mb twin-x corsair pc3200 memory (running at 200mhz...*note, i have tried
running it at 166mhz, but the same crashes occur*** 8,3,3,2.5 latency setting.

80gig barracuda hd

creative soundblaster audigy2 platinum

2500+ barton athlon xp running at 166mhz fsb (1833mhz)

liteon 16x dvd

msi cdrw48x

also, just tried reinstalling windows... same jazz, my radeon was working fine in my old msikt2 something or other fossil computer.... hmm, i think ill stick a 7500radeon in and see what that does.... if any suggestions please let me know.

also... it seems that all my 2d applications work fine the (sid meyers simgolf runs fine)... just the 3d ones break after a little whiles use...

What power supply is powering that system? Quality is important nowdays, not just wattage, so firstly it should be a quality brand, and secondly, I'd start with at least an Antec TruePower330. Better too much than not enough 😀

You should bump your memory to 2.7 volts and bring it down to 166MHz so it's running synchronously with your CPU's bus speed. That gives better system performance than if you have it at 200MHz out-of-sync.

Also, put the Audigy 2 in PCI slot 4 (the fourth from the top) and make sure to go into your motherboard's BIOS and disable the onboard MIDI, onboard gameport, and audio ("APU"). Since the Audigy 2 has Firewire, also disable the board's Firewire controller. Or take out the Audigy 2 and use your onboard nVidia APU instead 🙂

interestingly enough, it seems that i have an overclock now that is at 200mhz sync (both the fronst side bus and the memory are at 200mhz) and memory volts are at 2.70, vcore is at 1.8v and i have a 430watt antec trupower with a thermaltake sku800 and an 8mm fan on it. the temp on the cpu is at 40c most of the time. and my audigy is on pci 4 all onboard apps are disabled ...

running benchmarks (like flyby) in uT2003 causes a boot after 10 seconds (when the flyby looks over the top of the elevator where the redeemer is..for those of you who know ut2003)...

updated to the latest nforce 2 drivers and still no luck............
):

In the bios disable 8X AGP support and Fast writes and enable vid ram caching. In the SMARTGART tab in the ATI control panel make certain fast writes is disabled too.

If you want to pursue the overclock, make sure to set the AGP bus speed to 66MHz in the BIOS, and raise the CPU voltage to about 10% over the stock voltage. If you just want to run your system optimally at stock speed, bring CPU and memory down to 166MHz.

Thanks folks... so far, so good. Things are looking up, i just finished a benchmark using ut2003 and got some decent scores (75botmatch) and (171flyby) so it seems that indeed things are running ok, unfortunately there is no agp8x support now as i have left it disabled and no fast writes either.but im happy its working at all and as long as i could frag then thats ok... im gonna play around with it for a bit and see if i can enable these things again ... it MIGHT jsut have been the vidram caching that needed enabling... but, THANKS SOOOO muc for all of your help and happy fragging.

No problemo 🙂 Do not enable fastwrites again though, ATI cards don't likes it 😉 I will be interested in hearing if re-enabling 8x is OK though.
