Specs:
ASUS A7N266-vm
Athlonxp 1600
256 megs generic ram
40 gig Maxtor HDD

I was installing windowsxp for the first time on this system, and got the following error during the install:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your compunter.
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

then a bunch of text saying what the possible problem might be

then:
Tecnical Information:
*** STOP: 0x0000001a (0x00041284, 0x5cf08000, 0x00002817, 0xc0503000)

Beginning dump of physcial memory
physical memory dump complete
contact your system administrator...etc.

Has anyone else encountered this while installing winxp? I've tried using 3 different sticks of Ram in here, so it's probably not the ram causing the issue. Any ideas?

I used memtest86, it didn't come up w/ any problems? Are there any shadow settings or cache settings in the bios of the ASUS A7N266 that I should know about?

On the ones I've built, I

  • leave drive detection on Auto
  • enable Fast Decode (p. 49 of manual for reference)
  • leave memory timings at "By SPD" in the Chip Configuration sub-menu (p. 52)
  • set VGA Shared Memory to 16Mb or 32Mb
  • set AGP Aperture to 128Mb
  • leave VGA Overclocking disabled
  • set Video Memory Cache Mode to UC
  • leave the onboard peripherals below that Enabled
  • P. 56: set primary video BIOS to "Onboard VGA"
  • leave the shadowing as it is by default
  • enable ACPI Suspend To RAM
  • P. 64: disable virus protection

I haven't set up WinXP on any of them, only 2000, but that's the way I do ours (and mine). Got a reasonable power supply for that rig? Have you tried any name-brand RAM such as Crucial? That's what I've been using and it's working great: A7N266-VM configuration we use

I have a stick of Crucial kicking around, this was for a computer i'm selling to my wife's cousin, so I was trying to keep costs down, they aren't power users or anything anyway. :) I'll try out those settings when I get back home.
