A7A266 Problem Solved

I had a problem of random lock-ups on my new system over the past month. After trying to remove virtually
every individual component , I discovered the problem. I had 2 sticks of no-name 256MB DDR RAM
installed in the system. The A7A266 does not seem to like more than one stick of DDR RAM (I presume this
is only true of generic RAM). Once I pulled the second stick out, the system has run rock steady over the
past week. BTW I also had to set the unnamed jumper below the AGP slot to 2-3 from1-2 (thanks to
Andy Hui's many posts on the A7A266 for this tip). Once I removed the second stick, I tried resetting the
jumper back to 1-2 but the system froze when I went to check the BIOS. Setting it back to 2-3 seemed to
solve all problems.

Thought I would post this in case someone faces similar issues.

My system details are:

AMD TB 1.4
ASUS A7A266 MB with build in sound (currently disabled)
Generic Case with 300W Power supply
GE Force2 MX400 video with 64MB
1 IBM 40 GB Disk
1 Maxtor 40 GB Disk
Maxtor Ultra-IDE 100 Controller Card
SBLive Gamer 5.1 SoundToshiba 16X DVD
Plextor 16X CDRW
WinXP Pro

Yes I know. Your FAQ is what led me to the solution. However the problem was that even with the jumper
set in the 2-3 position, I was still experiencing a freeze with 2 DIMMs about once a day (in the 1-2
position the freeze was like every 15 minutes!). Removing one stick seems to have solved the problem.

I am still unsure however if this is related to the brand of memory, as I am using a generic brand (will
teach me in future to only get branded memory).
