Yeah I was going to order my 4400 from Monarch Computer but at that time they only had the OEM and although you could purchase a 3 year warranty from them. I'd rather have the retail package because it comes with the warranty and a HSF too. I just bought my other parts from Monarch though, my mobo, RAM, PSU and temp vid card (Radeon X300 SE). I'm waiting to get either the GeForce 7800 GT or the Radeon X900 Pro...whichever looks to be the fastest. The latest info I've read for about the last 2 or 3 weeks suggest that the new Radeon X900 will dominate or at least beat the GeForce 7800 clearly. But I digress, the HSF's from both Intel and AMD have been very nice the past couple years. If you look at the latest reviews on the A64 Rev E proc's, notice that many people are using the stock HSF and have been able to O/C a great deal just using those.

Another reason I like buying retail CPU's is processor remarking. It's probably pretty unlikely since the X2's are so new but it's still possible. I know there is also a remote change that a retail packaged CPU could also have been opened, remarked then resealed but much less so than an OEM. Personally, I've never had any problems buying OEM procs in the past but it can always happen.

If you want to spend a little more, Monarch does have the Retail X2's also. The X2 4400+ is $654 along with all the other X2 procs there. Here's the link: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...=CTGY&Store_Code=M&Category_Code=amddc

Do you have the P4C with the 800MHz FSB or the P4B with the 533MHz FSB? Either one is slow when compared to a A64. I've got a P4B 2.8GHz O/Ced to 3GHz...wee. Well, it was fast two years ago. Of course had I waited a month, I could have had the P4C the 875 chipset, but I was impatient and had to have it now. I didn't make that mistake this time.

I could have gotten the A64 4000+ with an AGP GeForce 6800 or Radeon X800, but I decided to wait and get a PCI-E mobo with the X2 4400+ and either a Radeon X900 or a GeForce 7800. It sux to wait but when you do, the dividends are worth it!

On the AMD roadmap for 2007, they already have a Quad-Core CPU planned for their Opteron's first. The A64 X4 line will follow like the X2 line is with the dual-core Opteron's. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1826657,00.asp If you look at the architecture for just the A64, AMD was already planning multi-core support when the first A64 came out.

Yeah, but will quad core still be 940 or will they be on Socket M or whatever by then?

Yes it will. It sux having to upgrade a mobo everytime a new core or after a few speed bumps are introduced but we have to give props to AMD for not forcing a new socket for the X2! That said, I'm not so sure they couldn't have kept the s939 for the Quad-Core's in '07. It's only one more pin than they have now but then again even if it was the sam pin count, they probably would have to be coded quite differently. At least the socket 939 will be around at least for two more years before they start phasing it out.

I'll be ready to upgrade in 2007. It's sad really...I haven't even gotten my Dual-Core system built and already I want to know the specs of what the Quad-Core will be. Oh wait, if we just wait a while I'm sure Google with come out with their future search engine. www.google.com/futuretech/Processors/AMD/Athlon+64+X2+Specs
