A64 X2 4200+ on Asus A8N-Sli Premium

Give us a list of all the settings you have questions about, and we'll give you some guidance on each one. Also, tell us what you are trying accomplish- run it stock or overclocking? What type/size of RAM do you have?

The motherboard I had before my current one was a A8N-sli Premium, so I could help.

My main concern is whether or not the bios settings related to running at stock speed are auto detected. It's been 4+ years since I built a system and the last time you had to enter the cpu paramaters manually.

I will be using OCZ EL Platinum Rev. 2 pc3200 ram. I may need to manually set the voltage for that but I'm not sure.

Thanks,
BGC

From my experience w/ using three different types of RAM, you will need to manually set all of your RAM timings in the bios, including voltage.

Yea, I got all the proper settings from the OCZ gurus in the OCZ support thread. I know I'll have the set the timings, just not sure what the mobo will default the voltage to.

I guess on the latest mobos you only have to set up cpu paramaters manually if you are going to overclock.

hmmm, iv got an A8N Premium and an x2 4400+. So far iv just left everything on auto and let it run, would i be better of putting all the settings in myself? I was so lazy the other day i just overclocked it 10% using that Ai Overclock thing in the bios

Should probably set everything up manually....once i figure out what all the settings are supposed to be at.

For running stock speeds, you can leave all the CPU settings on auto and you will be fine. As far as the RAM goes, though - you will probably have to set the timings manually because the "SPD" or "AUTO" settings in RAM generally set the timings too conservative.

For the most part, it's best to set all of the settings yourself - just to be in full control, and to know exactly what is going on with your system.

When I was first experimenting with overclocking, I used CPU-Z to look at what the bios was setting automatically, and based my manual adjustments of of those.

Ok great, maybe ill start doing a little bit of optimizing than  i guess ill start with the ram...did notice the "automatic" memory adustment has set my RAM to CL3, when its CL2.5. Pity i couldnt take some screenies of the bios to get some advice on what to set to what. Dunno what half the cpu releated settings are on AMD systems, my last system was an Intel.

INM8,

Just write down, on a tab of paper, all the settings you are curioius about. Post the list, and we'll give you our opinions (maybe facts, too 😀) about the best settings for them- based on what you're trying to get out of your system.
