A64 vs Pentium D vs Opteron 144

Right now the favorite to win is the opteron 144, but i'm open to suggestions. Planning on ordering tonight.

I'm upgrading from a P4 2.8... I don't plan on overclocking - stability is more important to me - I'm a designer first and a gamer second.

I'm also looking at the 754 A64 - I know it has a higher clock, but how will 512kb compare to 1MB actual performance-wise? Is it worth the tradeoff?

Ay other suggestions? (Also, feel free to recommend me a mobo)

not much speed boost, but it would be 64-bit, so if I have this compy for a while (and i'm poor, so i prolly will) it'll hold up for a little while longer... Maybe i will overclock a bit... but not insanely. I need stability. I'm fairly new to overclocking too, so there's that

You wont get much of a performance boost, but you could get a Pentium D 805.
A better bet would be a A64 3000+ or 3400+ from Newegg. Right now they have the 3400+ OEM at $148. That's a pretty good price, you should try to get it.
They are both 754 slots, but you can get PCI-E X16 too, like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813138268

Or you can go 939 and the 144 for $170, but hey, it's your choice

i was thinking the 144 from monarch for 130...

as for money in the bank, my mom is buying the innards of my current computer, so i'm using that money to upgrade

Don't even consider a 754 CPU, that would be a waste IMO. Get the 939 PCI-E cpu/mobo or forget about it....unless you go Intel. A lot of AMD guys are going to counter me, but I work on a lot of systems and by far the Intel platforms are the most stable and least buggy. So, if you're not into overclocking, a solid, stable mobo would be one made by Intel.

A Pentium D 805 would step on any other cpu in its price range for multi tasking.

Find me another $130 cpu that can encode media and play a game with no performance drop at all. What about running anti virus software while playing a game? What about burning a cd or dvd while playing a game? An Athlon 64 or Opteron will not do those tasks well. You need a Pentium D, X2, or Opteron 165 or higher to do it.


I would not even think of buying a non dual core cpu nowadays, especially when you can get them for so cheap.

Try to stay away from the s754's. Intels got dual core cpus that are very cheap. If you look, u may find a dual core that works with your current equipment. Then u can save your money to buy an AMD dual core system later this year once the s939 prices drop substancially...

I'd say get a decent s939 motherboard and a Venice 3000+ and overclock the hell out of it. It won't break the bank and those things can reach FX55 speeds. Plus you'll be dual core ready when AMD starts cutting X2 prices after conroe ships and sAM2 launches.

Just my 0.02

Edit: Well I guess there's no guarantee that AMD can cut X2 prices significantly without destroying their profits, but it's a safe bet that there will be some competitive price cuts. Then again the Pentium D is awfully cheap right now... Guess I'm just too much of an AMD fanboy to recommend intel. :p

A P-D 805/820 will whip an FX-57 and other slower single cores in mulithreaded apps and multitasking. And also when games and drivers get the multithreading love.

So, get a dual-core.

Yeah, the 805 is great for multitasking, though in single threaded things like recent games it's crap....Even so, I would get an 805

Edit: S754 is getting outdated. I'm cheap, so I buy behind the tech curve, but that's me...S939 and LGA775 have higher upgrade potential. AMD is much(?) faster, but Intel is a better value for Dual Core. (weird, the roles have reversed) Plus there's DDR2...

hmmm... i'll check those out.

so at present i'm thinking either:

opteron 144, AsRock dual sata2 and a geforce 6800gt

or

pentium d 805 or 820, not sure what mobo, maybe 6800gt
