A64 vs. opteron

Does anyone know how 2x Opteron 242 compares to an A64 3400+? I would assume the 2x Opteron would be faster, but are there any compatability issues as far as operating this system as a PC? This computer would be used for mathematical simulations and engineering research, not gaming. Any help/advice anyone can give me would be great.

A 2x Opteron is meant to be used as part of a dual-processor system. You'd be wanting a cheaper 1x Opteron, which are meant to run in single-processor systems. And the 1x Opteron would be very slightly faster, since it has dual-channel memory, and the socket 754 chips don't, assuming both are running at exactly the same speed.

If you are using dual processor setup you need to have applications programmed for multiprocessing use. For if not you won't see any gain. If you intend to use Opteron in a single processor setup you are wasting money.
