A64 temps

I hope this is the right forum. But I want to know if my A64 3400+ is too hot at 56C/130F ?

Is that at idle or under load? Which pin is it (754 or 939)?

I'm running my 754 pin Athlon64 3400+ (see my sig for complete rig) and it typically idles at about 34C. Load temps rarely go up more than 10C (max ever has been a +15C gain).

Its 754 its arount 56C during general use

56c for general use seems a bit high. You are still within spec, but definitly getting to the upper end of spec. What are your load temps? Run prime95 ro ~15-20min or play a game like Doom 3 or UT2K4 for 15-20 min and check the temps then. If you are pushing 60c then you should probably look into a better HSF or case cooling.

Im using a Thermaltake Passive cooler, it a huge monster with six heatpipis and two sets of blue fins.

Thermaltake... that says it all right there. I'm using a ThermalRIGHT XP-120, a monster of a cooler, with 5 heatpipes and a 120mm fan pulling air off of the heatsink (sucking, not blowing) and I get idle temps from 30-34C... That's with just two case fans in the V1100b case too.

I say either ditch the Tt cooler and get something with a fan, or put a fan on that thing to help it work (sounds like it really needs some help). If you don't get any joy there, time to replace the cooler.

Personally, the ONLY way I'd not have a fan on my processor cooler is if they start shipping them as such (haven't done that in AGES) or I go to liquid cooling.

Thanks, I'll try mounting a fan on/or near it. If that don't help I'll replace it.

Since it's passive simply adding a quiet fan that points at the cooler should do wonders for the temps. Heatpipes, fins, etc... do an awesome job moving heat away from the source, but they need some air moving across them to take that heat away. Even though it is a Thermaltake, a little air movement will probably solve most of your problems. Give it a try and let us know

What motherboard are you using?

I ask because if you got a chaintech VNF3-250 they tend to overinflate the temps by a lot,a good 15c too high in my experience with this board.

Well, when comparing those two heatsinks bigger is simply better. With an XP-120 you can move more air with a quieter fan. The big concern is size, some people cannot fit a 120 inside due to case size and CPU socket placement on the mobo so they opt for the XP-90.

I personally would go for the XP-120 if you know you can fit it but since you put a silly pic of your kid in your sig instead of your rig information I cannot tell whether or not it will fit.

just got an XP90 and am pretty happy with it....i was getting 60C+ load temps with a Venus 12...54C running prime with the XP90...

Well, I have an A64 (socket 754) MSI K8N Neo motherboard. I don't have any pictures of my rig online with the current motherboard though.

Edit-I have the A64 3400+ at stock speeds on the stock cooler. The thing is the cool and quiet software works great when it's in quiet mode but when it kicks up the speed of the fan it gets annoyingly loud. Also, my cpu temps were not reading correctly. I flashed the bios recently and noticed that my cpu temps seem to be reading more accurately but they are also around 56C.

The case is a Lian-Li PC-60 with side window.

Notice the proximity to the video card? I tried it the other way, but the cooler would have gone over the AGP slot...

So there you go, it looks like you can fit the XP-120 with your mobo and probably in the case. I would get that over then 90 and get a Enermax 120 variable or a Panaflo L1A.

Looks good. I really like that case...thought of getting that one a few times myself but just don't want to spend $200 on a case right now.

How is your system for noise?

Right now, with Cool 'n' Quiet active, idle temps (or light load) of 34C on the processor, the noise isn't all that bad. I have to strain to hear any fan noise from about 10 feet away. That's with the processor fan spinning at about 1000rpm too. My goal is dead silent from 5' away, which is the reason I'll be constructing a ducting mod for the system as soon as time allows. I bet if I set the target temp higher (I have it as low as the bios will go) the sound level would be even less.

Look at the $200 this way... It's an investment. I plan to still be using this case when I do my next mobo/processor/video card change (in 12-18 months) and probably again when I do the next change (another 12-18 months after that). I'm sure that eventually the mobo's will be made of different dimensions and such, which will prompt me to get a new case. When that time comes, the first company I look at will be Lian-Li...

Well, that was my plan when I bought my PC-60. Don't get me wrong, I love the Lian-Li cases. It's just the expense for something that won't really do much for performance.

The layout of that case just makes so much sense compared to traditional designs. I'd go with the silver though since all my drives are silver and my flat panel display is black and silver.

Ok thanks for all the replys. I'm using an Epox 8KDAJ3 Rev 2.2 I took a 80mm case fan drilled out some mounting holes on the heatsink fins and *walllaaa* 33C at passive use and 39C after the CPU tests in 3dmark 05.

I think so. I have a 3200 Winchester (2.0 @ 2.5 Ghz) running at 29c idle, 40c load.

BTW: I'm using Artic Silver and a Zalman 7000b
