A64 running at 61c...

My A64 is running at 61 celsius idle... I'm not sure what the problem is (I am running a MSI K7N2 Neo Plat, which I hear has some problems reading temps w/ current bios). I'm using a thermaltake Silent Boost heatsinke with a thermaltake smart fan II running at 4000 rpms. I used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and lapped the heatsink so much that I can see my reflection in it.

I have two thermaltake smart fan IIs for exhaust running at about 3500 rpms and two side fans, plus a 120mm intake fan infront of the case (thermaltake XaserIII skull case).

I'm not sure what's wrong! One thing worth mentioning; I can wiggle the heatsink VERY SLIGHTLY if I try. Though, it doesn't move around in the case, and it IS tight, but since it's so big it's pretty heavy, so I think that's normal.

Any suggestions/ideas/advice?

What is wrong is that your temps are likely OK, but your temperature reading is incorrect. I understand that there is a new BIOS out for your MOBO. Give it a whirl.

I have the latest bios, but I have heard that the temp readings are fudged a bit... The problem is, it starts at 45 celsius when I boot, then jumps up to 61 celsius a couple minutes later (idle). I'm taking those readins from the BIOS. Since it starts normal, I'm wondering if it's really a bios problem or if there's a problem with the cooling somewhere.

The MB temp hovers around 50 celsius, which is pretty normal I think.

that's a lot hotter than my asus mb temp, usually like 30

BTW; should the fan be blowing ON (into the grill) or AWAY FROM (drawing air out of) the heatsink?

From what I understand there are no idle temp in the bios.
After a while in the bios you should get full load temps.

Well, the CPU gets hot when it's in heavy use. I was checking the temps through the bios, which is why I said it was idle...

mine idles at 50-52C as well with a K8V deluxe but the HSF is hardly hot to the touch. the board readings must not be very accurate

I enabled "cool n' quiet" and after the next reboot, I was idling at 45c. I guess MSI needs to come out with a new driver asap!

How do you enable the "cool n' quiet"? Can you tell me where I can download this utilty on AMD's website? I can't find it.

Mine is 51c during full load, cause i'm using it for folding.

i believe it is support by certain A64 CPUs, not all

there is a particular stepping that support it, i just dont remeber which stepping at the moment
