i am looking for a nice HSF solution for my upcoming A64.

I would almost get the Zalman cnps Alcu, but now i hear people say its not that great if you want to overclock.

ThermalTake SIlentBoost k8 ????

XP-120/90 ????

I am looking for a nice one which is QUIET (or moderately quiet)....and which i can use for moderate overclocking....

Please share your input 🙂

thanks !

XP-120 is as quiet as the fan you put on it. It is more expensive but can provide the best cooling results even at modest air flow.

My XP-90 with 57 CFM 92mm Panaflo H1A keeps my Northy 1.8A -> 2.7/1.55V between 30 and 38º C with a case temp of 23º C. Sucks the heat right out of that chip. Newer CPUs run much hotter than this Northwood does, but to put things in perspective, I was previously running an Alpha PAL8942 + Sunon 35 CFM 80mm on this chip and it would get up to 45º C. XP-90/120 are like fan-powered refrigerators for your CPU. I bought this HSF to play with for now and use on an A64 sometime later. I'm impressed with it.

I purchased the XP-90 for an A64 3000+ that I plan to overclock moderately (maybe 20%). I chose the XP-90 over the XP-120 for space issues.

I am sure that there are some applications for which the XP-90 is too small but the XP-120 is sufficient, but I can't think of any off hand.

Any of the three (XP-90, XP-120, or Zalman) will work. I did not purchase the Zalman because the fan is integrated into the heatsink.

the zalman is especially made for quiet operations, but still does a great job at cooling. if you want the best, you'll have to go wtih the xp-120.

If I want to OC A64 3000+ 939. Will the Xp-120 allow better OC?
What's the quietest 120mm fan?

I kind a like the looks of zalman..oh well.

xp-120 is the best air cooler you can buy. The heat pipes work very well, the tremendous surface area works well adn 120mm fans give you much more cfm per decibal then 90 or 80mm ones.

totally correct

The Zalman and the XP-90 (or something in that 9X range) were about the best coolers for either sound or effectiveness and about equal to eachother either way. The Zalman was a better all-in-one package but the XP-9X let you choose your fan which sometimes could make a difference.

The XP-120 is slightly better than both of those, so if it fits in your case and on your Mobo, then it certainly would be a great choice.

However, the Zalman is very close to the same performance and is much less expensive (Get the AlCu version, since the all copper one doesn't really work any better) so it could be a good choice as well.

I currently have a Zalman on my AXP, and plan on using it on a my next CPU (939 90nm A64, probably a 3200+).

Can't really go wrong IMO.

I'd like to know that myself.

totally compatibile. Socket 754 and 939 Athlon chips are the same size. Just a different # of pins. Just make sure to use the backplate with the zalman. Not the stock one that comes on/with your mobo.
