So this is how the story goes. I bought myself a bright and shiney A64 3000+, Shuttle AN50R and a stick of Mushkin PC3500 Level 1. Now this is where the weirdness begins.
Do my initial build and computer refuses to load past bios. Later found it to be a compatability issue between my ATI 9500 PRO that works great in my other computer. So I install a older Geforece 2 MX and everything is happy. Problem solved right? I order a Sapphire 9800 PRO, but in the meantime I fool around with some overclocking. Get up to a nice solid 2470mhz (274.5x9) @ 1.65v that runs prime stable for at least an hour (longest I tested). But to do so I have to use the 5:6 memory divider. My memory runs solid with no memtest86 errors up until 230 with 2-3-3-6 timings and 2.9v. I cannot run anything other than cas 2 though and loosening the other timings do not allow for higher speeds. Cas 2.5 and the system will just beep and never load. However I am pretty happy with this despite not running 1:1.
So then I get my 9800 PRO and the system boots up. Nice. But I try to overclock using clockgen and any HTT speed of 220-225 will cause the system to crash or freeze. I found this weird since the AN50R is supposed to have a AGP lock and I've been able to run 274.5 HTT before. I try all kinds of things like changing voltages, LDT speed, power supplies, etc all with no luck. But while I was fooling with clockgen I decided to up the HTT and see what lowering the AGP frequency would do. So for giggles I set it to 270x9 and 52mhz for the AGP and magically everything is fine. Run 3dMark01 and 03 with no problems. So why is this? I see that some people appear to have no problem running a high fsb with a ATI card and a AN50R.
