A64 NC S754 vs. A64 DTR S754 vs. A64 WC S939

I'm in a bit of a dilemma: I'll be purchasing another system soon for my either myself or my GF, so have a choice of the said above CPUs. I intend to overclock it, probably substantially to the tune of 2.5GHz at least. As I've been reading on this forum, there has been substantial discussions about which CPU is the OC'er choice:

1) A64 NC S754 is a tried and true platform to go with readily available mobos and HSF combos, known to overclock to 2.4-2.5GHz easily air cooled.

2) A64 DTR S754 is still somewhat of a mystery to me, as i've heard conflicting reviews on it. It's spec says it should overclock well, but others here at this forum, say otherwise, preferring the old NC instead. It also requires a BIOS support and some driver tweaks. It's also somewhat combersome HSF requirement because of the lidless package is also a hinderance, but it does sport a 1MB L2 cache.

3) A64 WC S939 in the 90nm core looks really good so far, with AT being able to push it to 2.6GHz on stock HSF. Thermally, it seems to run really cool also, but the motherboard choices are somewhat lacking right now, until NForce4 (SLI!!) makes its debut. It also has a price penalty and availablity.

So, if u were buying a cpu now, what would u get, again keeping on mind u are intending to OC?!

I've wondered the samething. For me I'm leaning towards the DTR S754 chip because I've heard that it can OC just as high as the newcastles and with the extra cache should allow better performance. However I am not set in stone as to what I will finally decide on. Anyone else have any opinions?

Abit AV8 + SK939 A64 3000 + DDR500RAM = such major OC'in potential. ANand reached 2.6ghz easily with just 1.6v of core voltage with there winchester A64 3000.

Makes me sad cuz I have a NC A64 3000.🙁

Best choice easy, it will be signifigantly cheaper with better boards and indescernable performance differenances.

Only two boards really work with these and still have niggling issues. The HSF is also an issue...only a couple will work. Next stepping..better find an AR stepped core or your overclcoks will suck ass. Finanlly it's performance does not justify it's high price. $225 CH vs $160NC @ same speed.

All boards suck for overclcokers. I don't care how much anandtech likes the MSI. MSI is generally crap and all enthusiasts hate it. Second is cost. It's $350 for a combo here (MSI K8N + 3000 + HSF) vs $200 fpr a 754 solution (VNF3-250 + retail 2800). When both are overclocked to around 2500mhz no diff really in performance. 5-7% tops..

I would'nt spend 80% more money for 5% more performance and buggy boards.

IMO
Wait for real 939 solutions or 754 newcastle🙂
