Given every thing else is the same which would preform better for gaming:

XP Media Center
7900GTO
250gb HD

FX-55
MSI Neo4 FI
2gb DDR 500 (low timings)

or

e6300
Gigabyte DS3
2gb DDR2 800 (high timings)

at stock speeds?

over clocked?

The Conroe is much more future proof then the FX. Dual cores will be standard in no-time, they almost are already. I highly advise against the FX.

Go with the E6300 for sure. Why would you pay around $100 or more for a single-core processor that isn't going to give you all that much better performance at stock speeds in (single-threaded) games, nevermind a better experience overall?

Go back and read part 1 and 2 of the Core2 Duo articles here on Anandtech if you want to see some benches.

The E6300 was 10-20% behind a FX-62 at the worst at stock speeds, so figure for a FX-55 it would be less of a difference. And overclocked, the E6300 will beat even the FX-62.

Save some money and get the E6300 and you can put the savings towards something else in your rig.

And for the record, over the past couple of years I've had a P4 540, A64 3200, 3800 and 4000, which I just swapped out for a E6400 so I don't really favor one side. The dying chipset fan on my Asus A8N-E was a sign from god it was time to move to Core2 :D

Ok I probably should have stated what was really on my mind in the first place.

I've already bought everything for the FX-55 rig.
For $400 I got
1 fx55
1 Neo4 FI
1 Artic 64 Cooler
2GB Mushkin Redline PC4000

What I really want to know is if it'd be worth the trouble trying to sell all that and then paying the difference to get an e6300, Gigabyte DS3, and 2gb of DDR2 800.

Part by part you could probably sell the FX for enough to get the E6300. The memory and the motherboard are likely where you're going to eat it. If you already have the parts for the AMD setup, why not just stick with it? If you upgrade reasonably often, there'll be quad-core and who knows what else by that time. Depends on if you're willing to spend a bit more to get a moderate increase in gaming performance, but a bit better overall machine.

I rather jumped into this thing hap hazardly when the FX-55s were on sale at newegg. It went down hill from there as I've been on a spending spree ever since. I haven't installed any of the parts for the FX system yet, they are sitting on a shelf in my room waiting for the video card to arrive. The pc will be strictly for gaming as I am getting a laptop for Xmas to do everything else. At the earliest it would be next summer before I could upgrade the gaming rig again.

They would be the same. Both CPU's are powerful enough to feed your 7900GTO in games.
