After someone mentioned to me [at these forums] that I should look at the 3700+, I went around and read some reviews. Along with most of the reviews were overclocking benchmarks. Most people were able to hit 2.8ghz without a hiccup, running on stock cooling. Of course, with more "exotic" cooling, speeds were much higher. Someone hit 3.4 on liquid cooling.
Anyway...just how good is the stock HSF if you can get a 600mhz increase? And should I even bother getting an aftermarket cooler? Looking at the Zalman PNCS7700 right now. But after reading the reviews...doesn't even seem like it's worth it. I think I'll keep mine at 2.6 or so, and brag about having an FX-55 under the hood.
