A64 3700+ San Diego or A64 3800+ Venice

Both have a 90nm design. The 3800+ runs at 2.4 GHz with a 512KB L2 and the 3700+ runs at 2.2GHz with a 1MB L2. Which one is better?

i think tests have proven that some how the extra 512Kb of L2 cache over 200Mhz behind, have pulled the 3700+ SD in front .. haven't got any linkys for that tho

They are both good chips, if your not overclocking the 3800+ will be a little faster. But the 3700+ seems to overclock a little better and the 1mb cache gives them a slight advantage clock to clock.

I have the 3700+ clocked at 2.8ghz, its a very fast chip.😀

what did you have before, was it a winchester? if so what clock and can you feel a big performance difference between the two .. just think you have a pre-release FX57 at the mo 😉

Nice, now who needs to spend money on an FX 55 🙂? What HSF are you using? And what is the voltage at?

Actually other then games most things do not even make a 1-3% performance gain by having the 512kb more of cache and therefore would not cover the pr rating....In this case at least they made it 100 pr points less...A little more true....However compare this with a 3500+ venice and it may not cover in those apps I am talking about...

Yes, I was using a Winchester 3200+ at 2.6ghz, and I did a small comparison between the two at 2200mhz, and as Duvie said they were almost identical with the SD winning by 3% or less. The two areas that showed some real improvement were Memory bandwidth (10%), and FPS performance in games like HL2 and DOOM3 (17-18%). But when you clock the San Diego up to 2.8ghz there is a pretty noticable difference from my Winchester at 2.6ghz, and shows in benches too. For instance my best Sandra CPU arithmetic with the winnie was 12050 and with the SD I can get 13500.

I use the Thermaltake CL-P0025 Silent tower, its huge but it does a good job, my temps at 2.8ghz top out at 53-54c after a few hours of prime, about 1-2c higher than my Winchester with the same cooler. And I use 1.55 in bios on the Asus board which gives 1.57-1.60 actual per CPUZ

Don't forget, cache becomes more important as clock speeds increase, since the performance penalty suffered in going to main memory increases in terms of wasted clock cycles.
Of course, raising clock speed always increases performance, but the more cache you have, the tighter the relationship between two.

Once AMD hits 3.0GHz or so, the benefit of extra cache will become more apparent.

Without factoring in the price, I'd go with the SD chip. Overclocked 3000/3200 Venice is still the king of price/performance if you have good RAM or don't mind the use of memory divider.
