I got my new A64 3400 running with an XP-120 and a 3-D game (DAOC) crashes to desktop randomly.
I was thinking it was the cpu temp, because it's running a little warmer than my 3200 I had, but the temp is still only low 50s with game runnning/alt-tab check.

Any way to rule out a bad cpu? Everything else in the system has remained the same.

Absolutely none.

Do I have to reformat and reinstall windows with a cpu ugprade? Or Bios upgrade?

Passing memtest86?
HAve you tried more voltage?
Have you looked at voltage with a hardware monitor like CPU-Z?
Is it undervolting?
Have you tried upping fan RPM to cool things down?
What PSU do you have?
So many varibles w/o more info.

No....

Are you sure the HSF is mounted flush? Too much/little thermal paste?

You try running prime for a little while? Maybe you just got a bad chip...who knows.

Ok, CPU-Z is indicating 1.488v

Haven't tried Prime95 yet, Super-Pi getting "No exact in round" message

Well that helps. CPU is not stable a rated speed if you pass mem test. After testing memtest86 and mem passes Only thing I could tell you to do is bump Vcore up to 1.55. Otherwise I'd seriously be looking at a RMA.

Xp-120 are knowned to crush everythign else in the motherboard. Check for Bent capacitors. And Your result looks more like a memory error to me. Make sure your ram can handle it. And if you have a socket 754 board tone down the timings if you have more than one chip in @ ddr400+

Ok, is the A64 3400 o/c ed by default from factory? It seems to be running hotter than the 2.0gig A64 3200 I had in there previously. Same XP-120 heatsink, same Mushkin Special 2-2-2 2x512 sticks.

What's the normal temp on an A64 3400 Newcastle with retail fan/heatsink for reference?

A faster cpu will run hotter naturally. Your temp looks normal assuming your board has decent temp monitoring.
Check if you're memory is running 1t or 2t. If it's 1t try 2t and see if it's stable.
