I saw a guy on these forums recently with a 2500 barton at 2.4 GHZ which seems real high for an athlon. Would this be faster than a 3200+ at stock speeds?? if not would a 3200+ XP overclocked to well as high as it goes beat an Athlon 64 3200+ at stock speed??

Just think about the old GT40 and the new Ford GT in a race. The new Ford GT is faster because of newer technology.

But if the old GT40 was to have a rocket attached to it (overclock) which would be faster then eh? yea stupid example but i cant think of anything more technical :p

I compared my A64@speeds up to 2.4ghz against a Barton@2.43ghz 422DDR dual channel synch and the Barton did great until the A64 reached over 2.3ghz at which point by the equal speed of 2.4ghz the A64 wins everything I tested with. For instance, The Ut2k3 demo bench went from the Barton's flyby 224 BotMatch 79 to the A64's flyby 295 BotMatch 111.

I agree with dapunisher. Also, I thing the chances of OC'ing a barton to 2.4 are much less than a 3200@2.3(IMO), and that is in 32 bit mode.

If you pick up an Athlon XP-M, your chances are pretty good.

they would be close but i'm pretty sure the 64 would come ahead. and as soon as 64bit opitmized software comes out the A64 would blow the barton away.

A barton at 2.4ghz is not worth the heat output, the Hammer happens to CRUSH the Barton when it comes to temps.

I have a Barton-M that dose 2.4ghz at only 1.60v myself and it runs WAY to fuggin hot at that clock. Temps may read OK but my room temp rises after only a few hours of operation.

maybe on the staighaway the GT40 with the rocket booster would be faster for but when you throw in the curves and other variables would it be better than the new GT? probably not. Same reasoning applies to A64 vs OC bartons The Improved technology (integrated memory controller just to name one thing) More than compensates for a couple hundred mhz in clock speed making it overall a faster cpu.
