i bought the retail 3200+ over the OEM since they're the same price. I also have a Zalman 7000A Cu. my question is should i bother with the stock HSF? if i do use stock one first, would it make the zalman perform worse due to the thermal pad residue when i replace it? thanks

I started with the stock hsf.It actually is not a bad hsf.I'm now running the same zalman which is a great cooler.i would just use the zalman from the start, you end up using it in the end anyways.

It depends on which HSF you got with your retail CPU. The original one that used to ship with the AMD64 was/is an excellent unit (I'm refering to this one). It even comes with Shin Etsu G751 thermal paste which I consider better then Artic Silver 5. I went with the retail processor when I bought my AMD64 3400+ just so I could get this heatsink along with it. It's even good for moderate overclocking. Lately however, I've noticed that alot of the newer AMD64's are coming with a different, all-aluminum heatsink that doesn't appear to be as good.

the stock heatsink works quite fine in my case.
even allows me overclocking.
then again, i always try stock before i upgrade.. i like to know what i will be getting from the upgrade.

That's a good idea. Funny thing would be if you put on your aftermarket heatsink. Then there is no difference.

My retail 3200+ heatsink and fan have performed very well for me, nice and quiet as well. Granted I don't overclock it or anything.
