Looking to buy a new processor. A64 3000+ - Winchester Or Newcastle core? Is it worth the money to buy a 3000+ and not a 2800+ anyway? The 2800+ has some great deals under $200 while the 3000+ Winchesters go to around $230 (for a good deal). Woth the money to upgrade my purchase or stay with buyng a 2800+?

go winchester. 90nm equals less heat. is that canadian cause the 3000+ is $155 usd on newegg. as i understand if you want to oc then 3000+ if youre never going to oc, get 2800+

Well, then Im going with Newegg's - "AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939 64-bit Processor - Retail N82E16819103501" and "GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS-939" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU -RETAIL N82E16813128274" for $247 (w/o shipping). Let me know if that is a good buy. Ill go ahead and order today if so... Thanks.

I agree. Remeber that the 2800 is skt 754, and the 3000 winchester is skt 939, so you will have to choose the correct motherboard for whichever you choose

oh i assumed both were 754. the 939 will be better because 754 is dying. it will be the value socket from now on. also 939 supports dual channel ram if you buy 2 sticks. that helps performance about 5-10% above normal. go 939 for future upgradeability

what motherboard are you going to run it on? the new pci-e nf4 are out. try one of those since agp will be extinct sooner or later.

My setup will be...

A64 3000+ Winchester
GIGABYTE "GA-K8NS-939" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard
1.37 GB Of PC2100 DDR
eVGA 6800GT 256MB GDDR

1.37gb? what configuration of sticks is that?
may i suggest this so yuo have a upgrade path for the video card in the future?

nforce 4 ultra

radeonx800pro vivo

right now, it'll be a little bit slower, but a year from now when you upgrade, you'll have a lot more options available.
besides, search x800 vivio bios flash in the video forums to see hot to turn it into a full fledged x800xt which is a lot faster 😉

$119.00 !?! Ill stick with AGP 8x... Im not looking to make my computer 'fly'... Im just looking to get more than 40fps in CSS (had a P4 2.0 williamette)...

Ram config - 1GB stick, 256MB stick, 128MB stick.

Buy my setup or no? I need final advice.

yeah it's good. but the best performance will come from 2x 512mb ram from same company same model since dual channel speed up performance somewhat.
