A64 3000+ vs A64 3200+

Hey guys

do you think the a 64 3200+ is worth the extra 50 bucks? plus, there's a decent combo going - 3000+/msi k8t-neo for 238 shipped. wait till there's a 3200+ combo?

i'm just debating...

i guess i could get the 3200+ oem for 208, and then get a refurb board or somethin....

the cheapest new set is pretty much the 208 for the chip, and then about a 100 for the board. add about 12 for slow shipping, it's essentially 238 vs 324... is it worth it?

w/ the recent price cuts, i'm having a hard time not pulling the trigger.

suggestions?

I'd say look up some benchmarks/reviews and ask yourself if $50 is worth it between the 2.

For some it's worth it and for others it isn't.

When I faced the same decision a few months back the price difference between the 2 were @ $60-70 or so apart so I went with the former (3000+) rather than the latter. I figured the difference between the 2 in gaming (reason for upgrade) wasn't that noticeable and putting $60-70 into a vid card upgrade or something else would've been more beneficial.
 
turns out it'd be a lot more than just 50 bucks. factor in the price of the chip, and a non-combo for a mobo, and it'd easily be over 100 more.

as for your reccomendation....

that chaintech board looks good for my needs -> i won't be using gigabit ethernet anyways. how is it $214?

i added the combo up, and it shows up as 234+shipping. 🙁
 
what are your temps idle and at load?

how far do you think i could take it on stock cooling?

it's going to be more than fifty bucks.


mwave has a combo that'll put me at 292 shipped for the chaintech VNF3-250 and 3200+...

looks tempting, especially since the combo is 21 less after shipping that it would be from newegg.

On stock cooling I'm sure it would sit comfortably at 3200+ speeds with a good PSU.

You can pick up an OEM 3000+ from the egg for $170~, the heatsink for $35, fan for $12, and the Chaintech for $81. That's $298 for a setup that may reach 3400+ speeds like mine.

It just depends on whether you want to take the risk of OC, or stick with the reliability of retail. You could save money on RAM and a PSU if so.

i'd probably leave it at stock, especially since nothing warrants OCing right now...

thing is, OEM cpus have less of a warranty ( though i'm not really all that worried )...

but if i do want the 3200+, it'd be a much better deal to buy that chaintech combo from mwave for 292..

orr....the 3200+ oem from monarch for 208 shipped, and then the VNF3-250 from mwave board for 69 + shipping....it'd come out to 285, not bad...

now there's an idea...ugh, decisions decisions.

who knows, maybe i'll do an upgrade in the winter, i guess we'll see how doom3 plays in 2 weeks, and if it sucks, i'll upgrade.
 
Well, in your case it sounds like retail is the best bet then. The mwave combo means you wouldn't have to buy a separate HSF and pay shipping for that.
 
how's the noise level of the stock HSF on the a64?

i have a lian li case, and their stock fans kinda bug me...

time for some vantec stealths...

If you are OCing then no its not worth it all the CG steppings can get to about the same clocks so depending on what RAM you have in your rig you should easily be able to play around a bit. Esspecially with the newer NF3 250 boards where a couple of the multi's are unlocked.
 
I have an older 3000+ and just recently got a vnf3-250 to replace my ak86-l. With the stock cooler, which doesn't seem loud to me, on the vnf3-250 I can take it to 2.3ghz at 1.6v (which is what I keep it at 24/7) before the heatsink is overwhelmed. I have an alpha 8150 w/tt smartfan 2 on the way.
 
one last bump before i order. the rig wil be a 43 dollar difference (getting it from zip zoom fly)

292 for the 3200+ /vnf3-250
249 for the 3000+/vnf3-250

discuss.
