A64 3000 vs. 3200 vs. 3400

I've recently purchased the DFI Lanparty UT for $99 at Newegg. I'm now trying to decide on a CPU. I might do *some* overclocking, but stability is my primary goal.

A64 3000 - $147
A64 3200 - $190
A64 3400 - $219

Is it worth the $$ to move up from a 3000 to a 3200, or even a 3400? GHz-wise, I can see that a 3400 is 20% faster than a 3000, but its also $72 more. How much will I notice this?

In your opinion, what's the best buy?

Look at it related to $ per mhz....

Looks like the A64 3000+ is the better bang for the buck.....

NOw!!!! If you are going to OC then the 3000+ would probably defintely be the best since it is likely all 3 of the chips can likely do the same high speed. NOt ocing then the 400mhz increase will defintely be felt since it is a near 25% increase but for 50% more cost??? Not probably worth it.

Edit: Too many types and differing mhz for each pr rating...Newcastle or Winchester???

I had a 3000 on my DFI board and just went to the 3400 and I think it is worth the extra cost. I am running 2580 right now and I am sure it will go much higher. Sisoft shows it to be faster than a P4 3.8 now and I am running stock voltage. I do hace a Thermalright XP120 heatsink and temps only go up about 2C when playing Doom3 so I am very happy.

Why do you say that? I'm gonna get a new processor and I don't know which to get... 939 or 754. I want to stick with AMD because I want to help keep the company afloat, and I hear they're better for games in general.

I have 2 sticks of Mushkin level 1 pc3500 512 memory so I have 1024 total ram. I have had great luck with Mushkin memory but you pay for it.

im getting a used a64 3000+ for $100, needle in a haystack, get a 3000+ and if you decide its not enough then sell it and get a better one.

I would get a 939 simply because there is a greater upgrade path for new A64 CPU's. All new A64's will be socket 939. 754 will be become the primary platform for Sempron's.
