My dad bought 2 computers (built by a store) at the same time for his office for word processing, web surfing and maybe a little bit of photoshop uses and no gaming, he did went AMD because of my influence.
Sempron 2400+, 1 gig ram, onboard everything
A64 3000+, an ASUS mobo (don't know if it's 754 or 939) 1 gig ram, x300, onboard everything else.
However, he is complaining that the A64 system has no performance advantage and it startup way slower than the sempron system.
Could that be true if he is not using any CPU intensive apps?
How much faster is the second rig comparing the first rig anyway?

No, he must be high;)

If the systems are the same except the CPU, the Athlon64 should feel faster in in Photshop. Stuff like web browsing and word processing it would be very hard to see any real difference.

Have him load up something intensive.

Seeing as he isn't gaming, why the hell did you make him go AMD?

Intel > AMD for Photoshop, video editing, and things of that nature.

You don't need a 3Ghz equivalent processor to do word processing and browse the web, it won't show any great improvement over even a 1Ghz processor.

yeah, you won't see much difference between P-III and FX-55 in word processing that's for sure. If you really want to see difference, you should try things like high res. gaming, video encoding/decoding, audio conversion etc. For what you're using the computer, you might as well stick to P-III, unless you can spare the money, and just for the feeling wanna get a new rig...

He thought it was too much trouble to fix-up and combine several old pc, and he rather grap a full system (w/o monitor/mouse/keyboard) for well under $300
and the sempron 2400+ system was one of the cheapest out there.

There is nothing wrong with buying it as it will most likely be more reliable then old parts, just your initial post was concerning a difference in operating speeds and of which there will be no noticable difference in most office specific applications.

Processors don't make noise. Unless they're frying. Then you might hear a couple of pops ;)
