a64 2800+ vs sempron 3100+

i'm building a htpc, and the price for an a64 2800+ and sempron 3100+ are pretty close. i think the a64 performs much better, but will it also produce significantly more heat? i'm planning on putting this in an antec aria case and loading linux on it.

Is this for gaming too or just HTPC?

For just HTPC you could get a mobile XP chip instead of an A64.

For HTPC having a card that does hardware MPEG2 encoding (like the Hauppage PVR series) will make recording more reliable than software, and cut way down on the CPU power needed.

Hauppage says only a 1.x GHz P4 or XP equivalent is needed for simultaneous playback of one part of a program while recording another part. For just recording, the card does almost all of the work.

thanks for the advice. i was going higher end on the cpu because i was going to reuse a leadtek winfast 2000xp deluxe. i figured in the meantime i could buy a higher end processor. if i buy a different tv card in the future, this can go into my main machine which has an xp1700+. does that make sense, or am i making a bad decision here?
