A10-7850k to RX 480 performance DROP(?!?)

I bought an 8GB Sapphire reference 480 about a month ago, and it seems just dandy.
Getting fantastic performance in the Doom demo (may be the first new game I buy in a LOOOONG time),
and it's doing a lovely job quietly mining Ether the rest of the time.

BUT on the game that I play most often, TF2, I've actually seen my performance decrease since I installed it.
With just the APU, I was getting around 60 fps, with dips into the 40s when on crowded servers.
Now I'm getting in the 50s, with drops into the 20s and teens.
I get that TF2 isn't as AMD-friendly as Doom/Vulkan, but an RX 480 + 7850k (OC'd to 4 GHz) shouldn't be having this sort of trouble.
It seems to me like the onboard graphics have been disabled, but the game isn't picking up the new graphics card.
I tried Half-Life 2, Portal, and Viscera Cleanup Detail as well, and get the same results.
I've reinstalled TF2, and used DDU to wipe and reinstall the video drivers a couple times.

I've also poked around Radeon Setting and Wattman, but not really sure what to look for.
Driver is 16.9.2
Any ideas?

Disable the onboard graphics for the APU in the bios.

I have a A10-7850k matched with a RX470 and it ran TF2 no problems - definitely more FPS than the integrated. I can't confirm as I've uninstalled TF2 though. Dying Light and Alien Isolation run smooth at 1080p with the RX470 though.

I would expect the 7850k to limit the GPUs performance but not to below what the integrated. I note that HL2 and Portal and TF2 all run on the Source engine and so it would kind of make sense that you have issues across all of them.

Is it possible the drivers have upped the graphics details and AA etc to the point that they have degraded the fps?

You might want to check the CPU temperatures, maybe the additional heat from the 480 is too much for your case fans and the CPU starts to throttle. DOOM is very light on the CPU, TF2 isn't.

All those thoughts crossed my mind, but none of them made sense. That rig should crush those games even on max settings. It should see 100s of FPS in TF2, at times. Unless v-sync is on or some other FPS cap is in place. And dropping into the teens should not be happening. He/she was also getting higher fps while using iGPU, which is known to throttle the CPU under sustained load. Making it seem unlikely throttling is the cause, unless there are other problems which I am about to get to.

Did you turn off turbo core and APM in the bios? Are you using the stock cooler for that overclock, and at what vcore and temp? What version of windows? Might be time to turn that overclock off until/if you get the performance issues straightened out.

Another thing to look at is that the RX 480 is properly and fully seated in its slot. And that you remembered to connect the power cables to it. Fantastic performance is vague, what fps are you getting in Doom and what res and settings do you game at?

A quick search shows reports like your's going back years. Some fixed it with a reinstall of windows. Others by deleting the game folders and then having steam reinstall them again. Some did not post a solution.

Yeah there is no way your getting only 50fps in TF2 with a RX 480. Make sure your video cable is plugged into your GPU and not the Motherboard. Also uninstall Radeon Drivers and download and reinstall the newest drivers from AMD. Also go into Bios and Disable IGPU and Enable PCIe and turn off hybrid APU Crossfire. Also Turn off MSAA in your games and test again and report back and we can go from there.Hope that fixes the issues for ya though if not do report back.
