If you find your realtek 8139 series chip is sitting dead dispite its link activity light on, and havent updated the Windows XP drivers - it is the inbuilt XP drivers. I've had this problem twice now, on 2 boxes that use Realtek cards.
A quick look on google reveals nothing. Neither does a search in here. Solution? Just install the updated Realtek drivers. Its an odd issue for sure....
