The chicken so the dead baby could be stapled to it so it could cross the road.

Otherwise the video is kinda cool but I wish they just used a better song.

I just wondered if they used some software to do it... I've seen similar stuff for less involved work. (Doesn't usually go beyond one face and only the face)

My guess is they used some form of mocap software to animate the anime figures using their gestures and facial expressions.

Looks like it could be MikuMikuDance, although I'm unfamiliar with those models.

Note, these are also MikuMikuDance:

I'd say the live version came first. The pulling of the shirt probably isn't something that would've been animated without an animated shirt to pull. It's also highly unlikely that anyone would've animated all those wacky facial expressions without cause.

Oh, how much fun it would be to go back 40 years and tell engineers about the things that computers will do in the future.:D

And at what price as well! MikuMikuDance is free and it'll run on a $50 P4.

Just downloaded it. 200MB in use and not going over 12% util on my X2.

me think they just practiced a lot.

That doesn't explain why the anime characters are singing the song. Unless someone can pull up the anime as a separate piece done earlier, which would be very strange in its own right, the simplest explanation is still some form of mo cap.

maybe the extremities... facial expression would be very hard to capture

Not really. If you look closely it's only the overall gross expressions and pupil tracking that are being captured. Nothing subtle. There are cases where the guys move their eyebrows in odd ways that are not captured at all. Also they are making very exaggerated facial expressions which would be easier to capture. That and facial recognition has come a long ways in the past few years.

Also once they had it all captured it would have been easy to go back in and add a few subtle things by hand.

Version in the original post:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-287ehU1U4

And version with only the MMD anime gals:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4LbZWnej_s

I'm amused they even included the 4th guy in the background.

Here is the same one but they deleted the 4th guy, added more shading, de-spikified the left one, and put them on stage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHs0y8xZJnU

This also seems like the same "engine" and recording but with totally different characters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJLuSh3ECzc&

But it's not just variations on this one. I wonder if it was a MikuMikuDance programming competition, because there are tons of these videos. They actually cut the video short, but there is a longer version, such as this one that only focuses on the spiky haired guy, for the entire video.

However, most of the videos out there are less accurate. For example, this one has jiggling boobies, on a woman in chains, but the body movements are less smooth, and the mouth animation is less accurate too.

And then some are even more inaccurate with regards to the facial movements, which would suggest if there is a Kinect capture, it's only capturing the very gross movements.

And finally, this is the Samantha Carter as a dancing German soldier version:

Well, it was entered into MikuMikuDance Cup 7. Whether it was created specifically for it... who knows. The Japanese do a LOT in MMD.
The motion data was released, accounting for all the copies using different models.

Here's some more stuff:

Bad Apple!! Shadow art vs MMD side-by-side
(and to show someone has a LOT of time on their hands...)

MMD Crono Cross opening (Both have 1:00 openings)
