A/V Junkies - help me pick my next receiver!

The Sauce

I have alway been especially partial to Denon due to the warm realistic sound. I had a Yamaha before but did not like it at all due to the overly bright, brassy sound. I know virtually nothing about the quality of the units out there today. My budget is about $1200. Recommendations please?

Wasn;t there a thread recently about a Pioneer receiver that was really just a cheaper version of their top-of-the-line with some discontinued tech that was kinda cheaper and pretty good? Can't find the thread now - it was a few months ago.

If you like the Denon sound, maybe a 3805?

Do you have any specific requirements?

What's the rest of the system?

Speakers aren't that great but I am planning to upgrade everything eventually. Right now I have Infinity RS-4's (I think???) for the front, junk RCA's in the back and a 12" Infinity sub. Everything else is pretty generic...nothing high end.

Hm. I would suggest taking a look at the Denon 3805 if you want to stick with them.

What are your needs though? How many devices do you have...things like that

Other receivers I might suggest Pioneer elite series, Harman Kardon 7300.

Neither of these is usually characterized as too bright. Especially the HK

I had heard a while back that the Denon's were outsourced now and not of as high quality as the original Japanese units. Anyone know about Denon quality these days?

Then you really probably don't have to go up to a $1000 if you don't want to.

A few to check out:

Pioneer 1015tx / elites
HK 435 / 635 / 7300
Denon 2805 / 3805

I am not familiar with Onkyo's product numbers, but I am sure they have some good ones too

Haven't heard that. They still get high praise from what I have seen.

I would recommend that Denon with 2 audioprocessors in one box. But it's also like $5000, so probably out of your price range. But still. It owns.

You might look at the higher priced yamaha stuff too.... I have one of their midrange ones and it is an awesome receiver.

Yah I just checked reseller ratings and all of the cheap places have ass-for-ratings. ibuydigital.com seemed ok though. Guess I'm willing to pay extra for better support since this thing will probably get drop-kicked a few times in the mail.

If you're worried about it shipping (which is a real issue) you might want to check out some local stores to see what their prices are.

http://www.bradfordshifi.com/prices.html has some prices listed of what might be typical of places in your area, but you might be able to do better than that. They might even be able to pricematch some places if they're authorized resellers.

Personally, I would try a few different receivers out at home. With receivers and speakers you really need to try them in your room. In the 1000 - 1500 price range, it's really hard to get a bad receiver from Onkyo, Denon, H&K or Pioneer.

If you want reliable customer support, www.Crutchfield.com which is one of the few actually authorized for online sales of Denon (check Denon.com for authorized)

i have a denon 3801, really awesome reciever. so i might suggest the 3805.

i bought my denon at The Good Guys. i dont know if this store is in your area. but just a warning, make sure you buy it from an authorized dealer, so you can get the warranty.

edit: warranty/authorized dealer page
