A USB Compact Flash Card Reader fried while plugged in

I had some pics and documents on a Compact Flash Card from my camera. I used a portable USB card reader that got warm while on a public USB terminal, 1 hour. The flash card doesn't work now in the camera. I don't have another card to try out the reader.

Anyone else ever have this happen? It became warm, not smoking hot.
