A US hiker, freed after spending more than a year in jail in Iran, has promised to lobby for the release of the two men she was arrested with.

All three were arrested near the Iran-Iraq border last year and accused of spying. The two men still face trial.

US President Barack Obama renewed his call for the pair's release, saying they had done nothing wrong.

Doesn't these hikers know that there is a war going on in Iraq, and Iran is having political issues with the US?

"Hiking on the border of Iraq/Iran". Are spin doctors running out of material?

Actually, I remember reading that there is some real question as to whether they were actually over the (unmarked) border.

I agree, except I think they want to "experience the world" as much as change it. I think I know exactly what kind of person they are. They're the type of hippy dippy who literally does hate America and instead identifies with countries like Iran. They also don't understand that the third world is a very dangerous place, not like their wealthy suburban homes. In their minds, wherever they go, simply due to hating America they'll be welcomed with open arms by "the natives".

They were stupid enough to be hiking in Iraq, stupider still to accidentally wander into Iran, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they intentionally went over the border.

I hate to say this, but any U.S. citizen that steps into Iran or North Korea should know and accept the consequences.

Out of curiosity, how do you know any of this, like the part about them hating America? I'm not saying you're wrong. The stereotype sounds like it could be accurate, but is there specific information available about their political views?

I would totally believe this. And if it is true, hopefully the experience has made them finally grow up.

I'm just stereotyping them based on their appearance and the fact that they accidentally hiked into Iran. I'm definitely not trying to make any claim that this is anything but my opinion

They hike, so that means they are America hating hippies? I have to say, that's pretty lame, even as stereotypes go. Kind of reminds me of another post here which says, they are Jews, therefore they are spies. I had hoped that there was some available biographical info you were basing this on, but apparently not.

They're Americans who hike in Iran, or at least on the Iran-Iraq border. To me that clearly indicates a warped view of the world. There is a reason they thought they'd be safe. They may not be America haters but I'll bet they had some kind of misguided sense of solidarity with Iran.

I think I'm far more qualified to stereotype hippies than you are!

BTW, I just found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_detention_of_American_hikers_by_Iran
