A university giving incompletes to everyone due to too many missed days?

One of my manager's was talking about how UCF (University of Central Florida) may be giving out incompletes if we keep on missing more days due to hurricanes. I just asked a couple friends and they have heard this from other sources.

Could a school do this? I really don't wanna throw a whole g-damn semester away. I called shens at first and I still declare it until I hear otherwise....any comments on this?

In Texas, if you miss more than X number of days in a public school, you by law cannot be given a grade. I'm not sure if this applies to public universities, nor does it apply out of state. However if they were giving incompletes it may have been due to state law or something?

Interesting....

Id like to hear what comes of this.....

And college graduates wonder why their degree doesn't mean sh!t.

Im assuming these are school wide shut downs due to the hurricanes, and not just students missing class.

Yeah the have the right to do that, because you wont be able to complete/cover all the actual material. Often times incompletes mean you have 90 days from the end of the semester to meet all the course requirements.

At my HS, if you missed x number of days, you got an F. Dumb rule in my opinion, if I can show up half the time and still get an A then let me come just half the time!

Exactly..

If you score the score on the test that is all that matters. It proves your understanding of the subject (if it's a good test method)

The teachers don't take attendance, so it doesn't matter if you go or not. It just benefits you so you can get a good grade in the class. I guess we will see what comes of this, this is rediculous. There's no way they could give 45,000 students a I for this semester.

it would be interesting to see how they handle this quarter then... I think they would have to give people the monetary "credits" so they can retake classes again.

I am taking graduate courses at UCF and have not heard about this. There is no way that they could do something like that. In fact I am pretty sure that they build in a certain number of extra days just in case something like this happens. College is different as well because we only go a few days of the week we don't miss as many classes.

woohoo, just found out we get monday off! Thanks Jeanne!

btw we're only behind like one period in most of my classes (main campus). i seriously doubt thats enough to give out incompletes. regional campuses have had more days off though, so i guess YMMV!!

That's what I guessed. I just thought it was funny that someone said that.

I'm going to Embry-Riddle, and the official word is that they're committed to not cancelling the semester and giving us refunds - most likely due to the fact that at 30 grand a pop, refunds to students would be quite costly after we've been here for a month.

We're currently locked down at the dorms here, and will be until at least monday morning.

I work for UCF so i could probably find someone that knows for sure - but from what i remember from attending there is that they can do this, give incompletes if too many days are missed(its better for you then getting an F), but this should NOT happen for hurricane days, IMHO.
