A trite observation on the legality of marijuana.

Thinking about the absurd US "drug war" the other day I couldn't help but be amused at the dichotomy that is our western laws surrounding cigarettes and pot.

Yes yes I know this is nothing new and has been said a billion times. I guess the sheer absurdity of it is so often overlooked that sometimes when it's brought back to light by some incident I can't help but talk about it.

Here we are sitting around trying to argue back and forth as to the health effects and morality of smoking pot. Whether it has any appreciable long term effect at all is debated back and forth (there is some evidence both ways). All the while decades of research and legislation has long ago brought to light the fact that cigarettes are not only unhealthy but one of the deadliest pastimes people can partake in on a daily basis.

Yet pot is the devil and corrupts infinitely and cigarettes are as acceptable as bottled water.

COMPLETELY TRUE STORY: I initiated the cutting edge of formal government research on this point.

"to make marijuana against the law is like saying God made a mistake, you know what I mean? It's like God, on the seventh day, looked down on his creation and said, 'There it is. My creation. Perfect and holy in all ways. Now, I can rest.............. Oh my me. I left fucking pot everywhere. I should never have smoked that joint on the third day. Shit. If I leave pot everywhere, that's gonna give people the impression they're supposed to use it. Shit. Now I have to create Republicans.'" -bill hicks

the punishments for possessing it are rediculous too, here in Texas any amount of pot under 2 ounces is an automatic 6 month county jail sentence, most first offenders get the sentence suspended and are put on probation instead but that's just as bad, the fine that goes along with the charge is ~$600, and then you have a $200 court cost, AND $60 a month in probation fees, plus another $10 every month so you can piss in a cup for them...

if you have over 2 ounces, your screwed, automatic 1 year state jail felony.

Try Arizona. I know two folks serving 8 years each for 2 ounces.

Wow... glad I didn't grow up there. Got caught with a couple of ounces when I was about 16 and all we got was a small fine and a hundred hours community service - planting trees, good fun. We also got beaten down by the cops but that's just what you get for being 16.

wow, that is so stupid, 8 years for some pot, when child molesters are serving less time.

I just hate that it seems perfectly acceptable at work to talk about how drunk you can get outside of work, but I can't mention smoking weed for fear of losing my job.

Never mind the hypocrisy of being able to take a break from work to go indulge in one sort of chemical addiction, but not another. Why can't I have a joint break dammit?!

this guy evidently agrees.

Hitlery's Latest:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - An "insatiable" appetite in the United States for illegal drugs is to blame for much of the violence ripping through Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday.

Clinton acknowledged the U.S. role in Mexico's drug cartel problem as she arrived in Mexico for a two-day visit where she will discuss U.S. plans to ramp up border security with President Felipe Calderon.

Dateline, 1920s, Chicago - and virtually every other city in America.

Prohibition.

Did we stop people from drinking, even though it was against the law?

Nope.

Did we fuel criminal gangs with lots of money, enabling them to buy weapons and terrorize the public?

Yep.

Did we learn a damn thing from this sorry episode in American history when it comes to prohibiting the consensual use of intoxicating substances by adults?

Absolutely not.

Maybe this economic dislocation will provide the same impetus for legalization, licensing and taxation that The Depression did for booze - the appearance of the almighty dollar sign in politicians eyes as other tax revenues inexorably shrink towards zero.

Hope springs eternal for a sensible action from our nation, after nearly one hundred years of stupidity in relationship to drug control policy throughout the United States.

If Hillary really wants to de-nut the Mexican Drug Gangs (and the drug gangs in this country) the most effective way to do so is to destroy their ability to make a profit, and there is only one way to accomplish that.

yeah, but the money is in cocaine. I don't see that being legal anytime soon. The drug lords could give two shits if pot is legalized. Hell, it'd probably make it easier for them to ship their dirt Mexican brick weed in larger quantities and at cut-throat prices to offset their losses in cocaine trafficking.
