A trip down memory lane... Quake2: crusher + massive1

I was a little bored tonight so I decided to grab my Quake2 CD & see how my system handles yesterday's games (or maybe the day before yesterday...).

I installed Quake2, updated to v3.20, & grabbed crusher & massive1 from ReactorCritical.

The first thing I did is run demo1 at 320x240 to see what the CPU limited maximum fps was: 320 frames per second. :D The video card isn't the limiting factor until 800x600, at 640x480 I was still pegged at 320 fps.

Since 640x480 results are a little meaningless, I decided to run all my tests at 1600x1200.

The results?

crusher.dm2 = 114 fps
massive1.dm2 = 146 fps
demo1.dm2 = 158 fps

Just for the heck of it I switched to software rendering @ 1600x1200. demo1 flew by at a nearly playable 15 frames per second.

:D

I'm tempted to play through it, as I never did go very far. I discovered online gaming & spent a lot of time looking at a disconnected phone jack. :|

Anybody else have any suggestions as to what I should benchmark? I got 3DMark99 MAX & 3DMark2000, but 99 won't run. It requires DirectX 6.1, anybody know how to install DX6.1 on WinXP? :D

BTW, this is a dual XP 1800+/512 MB/GF3 Ti200 @ 200/475. Many of you should be able to beat my scores with ease, considering that Quake2 doesn't even touch my second processor.

<< I've been playing Road Rash and NFS II SE for the past two weeks. :)

Cheers!
>>

NFS II SE kicked ass! I bought two V2's in SLI & ran them with my GF2 so I'd have Glide support for games like that.

I still play Quake 2 all the time, it's the best Quake game IMO.

I'm anxious to see Quake 4 since it's rumored to be a direct sequel to Quake 2. :D

Hmmm....just ran crusher, only getting 50fps with my V5 at 1600x1200....but it looks sooo good with the GLide driver :)

Ah ! Q2, the game that brought my 1st rig to it's knees, requiring me to learn how to build a computer. V2's in SLI, FPS junkie, computing and gaming were fun then, no AOL users needing support, those were the good old days :)

<< I still play Q2, CTF & WF. There are a couple of servers out there. >>

I loved Q2 CTF and DM, more fun to me than Q3. Lately I've been playing UT deathmatch offline, since I don't have enough free time to stand a chance against the people playing every day :) it's tempting to look for those Q2 servers and join in CTF, even if I'm just catching bullets meant for the good players on my team :)
