A Topic About Sports and Their Injuries

Hey guys,

It's a bit of a long post, so I will summarize here: "Have you guys ever continued your sports playing on a body part that has not yet fully healed due to your love for the game?"

My ankle is kinda stiff right now, but a lot lot better than it was a week ago today when I sprained it while going up for a rebounding and landing on my defender's foot! It was a pretty heavy sprain... forcing me to the ground for about a minute or two squirming...

This wasn't the first time... on my count this is the 5th time on this foot -- the right foot having been injured seven times...

I have this HUGE urge to play ball right now!!! And I can walk perfectly normal right now, however again--my ankle is a bit stiff....

I have tried jumping a bit in my room w/ my bball shoes on and it seems glitch free (knock on wood)

I know you guys will tell me to lay off it to let it heal properly, and that my coming back to the game too quickly has probably contributed greatly to my reaggrevating my ankles... but... what woiuld the athlete inside you say?!!

Have you ever played on a "not-fully" healed body part and been fine?

Thanks!

Used to do it all the time, and it wasn't for the love of my sport (cross country. track & field, a little bit)

Ankles, muscle cramps, knees, hip pains, you run it all off. It was the competitive side of me that put me back on the course running with nothing to think about aside from the pain shooting throughout your body.

My friend just came out of surgey 3 weeks ago to have his knee straighten, he was already playing ball last week ... 🙂 Must be the playoffs, everytime I see a game on TV, I have an urge to go out to run a few games ...

I busted my spleen playing hockey and went back to play 6 weeks later. It took a while to get back in game shape, but it's better than never playing again.

I sprained my ankle last year (around July 4), and it hasn't been the same since. After each session of running or playing basketball, my ankle swells up considerably.

When I balled regularly I would usualy jam a finger(or 3) every week or so and I would stop playing after for that day and get right back in the next day.

Hehe, when I got back yesterday my ankle ached, and today I am worse off than I was yesterday before ball....it wasn't a smart decision regarding that aspect... but boy was it worth it to be out there running again

><GG)

THanks iamme... I never let my ankles heal fully, I just keep going back and back... however it has yet to have taken me "THAT LONG" to heal.. the longest period was my first time (4 weeks in a cast) afterwards I was fine and playing ball again w/in a week....

ALl my ankle pain has come from bball, maybe I should switch to another sport... maybe ping pong or something 🙂

My own experiences playing with injuries:

- First of all, know your body, don't force the issue - a prolonged injury will only make you play less basketball in the long run.
- Play half court game instead of full court - less running.
- shoot outside more instead of crushing the board, pass more (your teammates will appreciate it), use more screens/help set screens, etc., another word, work on other aspects of the game.
- modify your game and buy some time to heal while enjoy the game until you are ready to play like your old self again.

It's hard to change my game... ie: NOT crashing the boards when it's my instinct too...

Come to think of it .. all my ankle injuries didn't come off a drive or anything but rather the end of a layup or rebound... when I'm right under the basket... BOO!

good info here: Thread

advice: buy ankle braces

while you're still healing, wear the brace, but when you feel you're fully healed, dont wear the brace all the time. i've seen cases where wearing the brace puts strain on other parts of your body. i had a friend who wore an ankle brace for a significant amount of time, then ended up having knee problems as well.

and on the topic of the original post, i went through a period of spraining my ankles a few times over the course of a year. same foot always. some of them were pretty bad, but i usually tried to get back on the court as soon as i could. i dont think it fully healed until i took like 6 months off from playing. so i guess the right thing to do would be to stay away for a bit, but i know, its hard! 🙂

yea i did as well. but it really depends on how serious the injury is. if i were you, i would continue to shoot around (to quell the desire to play) but refuse to play any games. let your ankle heal before you decide to play bball hardcore. if you dont, you could make things much worse for yourself in the future.

well some good advice is to at least get some of your injuries looked at and some medical advice. I used to play lots of sports all the time. I can't stand to lose and I'm pretty competitive (many would say TOO much). I played field hockey for a few years as well as basketball and softball. I broke several fingers and a few toes as well as spraining/contusing (spelling?) many other things. 🙁

The sad part is, with many of my injuries, I just disregarded them and kept pushing myself until I felt I could barely move. I ended up going into PT for months and it never helped. Getting stuck with a quack for an orthopedic didn't help either. But now I get pain everywhere and a few of my fingers are crooked. I have shoulder and back problems/pain as well as the occassional cracking/popping of other joints and bones. So please, for the love of God, play ball if that's what you like but be reasonable and see a dr when your ankle swells to the size of your calf (mine did that.)

Best of luck

Amen... it's difficult as hell--alas, will try

Instinct change quickly when you are hurt - your instinct to avoid pain will be greater than that of rebounding. I guess if you still have quick instinct (no hesitation) to rebound, then your ankle is probably not hurting that badly.
