Oxymoron of the day: Paying for usage of a FREEWAY lane?
Toll lane.

(hope its not a repost, found nothing under "toll" search)

1. Defeated the purpose of a carpool lane.
2. Defeated the purpose of a $271 fine for using the carpool lane.

-------------------------
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that could eventually allow solo drivers to pay their way into the carpool lane of the Sunol Grade segment of Interstate 680.

Using the FasTrak system, solo drivers could pay between $4 and $8 per trip to enter high-occupancy toll lanes under the legislation sponsored by Assemblyman John Dutra, D-Fremont.

"When solo divers have the opportunity to pay to use these lanes, it eases traffic for everyone on the highway,'' Dutra said.

The bill, AB2032, requires that traffic flow freely on the toll lanes by adjusting tolls throughout the day and regulating volume with higher rates during peak commute hours.

Bay Area transportation officials don't expect construction to begin on the toll lane until 2007 at the earliest, meaning the lane might not be available until 2010

Time to work the graveyard shift! 😛

Well considering I got a ticket every couple of months for riding in the carpool lane when I used to drive a highway that had one, I would pay for it.

Good for you

This is a win win for everyone and I applaud it.

The CARPOOL idea failed and not many people are willing to do it.

Why not use these lanes and allow people to pay an addional tax to pay for road improvements.

Should've used a blow-up doll.

Maybe I'm not familiar with traffic in California, but here in NY if there is traffic in the right lanes, there is traffic in the car pool lane. Why would you pay?

Sounds like a great idea to raise extra money for the state. What is the problem?

Because people with more money could more easily afford the charges, it's descrimination against the poor

maybe a totally seperate lane sectioned off from the main highway? i think my wife was telling me about something like this in virginia. somehow it was faster, but it was regulated at both ends and at all the on/off ramps.

I dont understand this.. maybe because I've never been to an area with more than a few million people...

but.. so you have a 3 lane road.. right is hell slow.. semis and stuff. middle is normal, and left lane is passing only..
WTF do you need specialty lanes for?

if the roads are getting backed up its just plain not wide enough, right? or are there idiot drivers in the wrong lane?

the state of texas is putting toll lanes down the middle of I10, it accelerates construction by 10 years

Highway 91 in Orange County, thank you FastTrak. It's a great time saver for only a few bucks during rush hour. Makes that 20 mile trip from Anaheim to Riverside from 90 minutes to a decent 30 minutes.

There are two lanes in this system, and even some sections got a carpool lane. Enter/exit only at certain points.
