A thread for the athiests: if there was a god, what would s/he (or it) be like?

I'm assuming that most of the athiests here would say that they are athiests because of the absence of logical proof in a god. If there WAS a god, what would you want that god to be like? What attributes/characteristics would you imagine that god to have? What kind of relation would you want yourself to have to that god? What kind of relation would you want other people to have to that god? Would s/he be a hands-off god, just letting stuff run like it is today? Would s/he be active in the world? Would you want the god to be omniscient and omnipotent or more human, limited in powers? You can make your god, in this imagining, benificient, indifferent, or even malevolent (though I don't know why you would) so you don't need to worry what they'd do with the omniscience or omnipotence, since s/he'd be incorruptable if you choose to describe him/her that way.

Christians (and followers of other religions, but Christians in particular), please don't stir up too much antagonism in this thread.

(I'm cleaning a crab so if I don't answer for a while, that's why - hands are covered in crab meat and shell. 🙂)

Aw, come on guys, if you're gonna post jokes post something serious as well. 🙂 *makes puppy eyes at M4H* Pleeeeeeaaaase?

You should know that you can't give the puppy-dog look with blue eyes. 😉

<Edit>

No, seriously. I figure He is a lot like the episode where Homer quits church. Big job to do, big responsibility, and big power - but completely down-to-earth and not above mingling with the little guys.

If there is a god, I think what we want is irrelevant.. However, I imagine that if there is one it will bear no resemblance to Judeo-Christian concepts of God. It will probably be a form of intelligence or energy that is somehow, intentionally or not, responsible for the initial shape and direction of our universe. Not "divine" at all, and most likely not active in current events here.

hoenstly, i don't know or overly care... i live in this universe and want to explore it

i'll worry about the nature of god when i'm dead

Well, I'm talking to athiests who presume that there isn't a god, so the question is a theoretical, "if there was, what would you want". The question of designing god is ludicrous, but in a theoretical situation where people don't believe in him anyway it's well enough to toss around.

I probably shouldn't answer since I'm an agnostic, but I will anyway 🙂

It would not be male or female, since it had no need or ability to reproduce sexually, and we would not be physically in its image just spiritually in the best parts of ourseleves.

Although it might have divinely inspired one or more of Earth's religions, it would not judge the fitness of souls based on a single religion that has the "one true faith" while condemming all other good people to eternal torment or oblivion. It would not care whether you ear pork, or whether you acknowleged your sins without performing a specific ritual.

It would expect humans to love and respect each other, and would not care about being worshipped or ruling humans through fear.

My own morality would force me to reject salvation from a God who was any less loving and forgiving, even if I had absolute certainty of its existence.

my god wouldnt require us to worship, wouldn't require us to believe in him, wouldn't make us devote our lives to him. my god would judge you based on what type of person you were and how you acted in your life.

He would provide a heaven for everyone.

I was thinking about how heaven could possibly exist (a place where everyone is happy seems about as possible as a world where everyone is happy. Two people can both be good, but still not like each other and antagonize each other) when I concluded that it would have to be like a dream. Everyone would have his own personal reality where he is totally happy...blissful. Everyone would be doing what they want in their own reality and not affect anyone else negatively.

For example, Genhsis Khan's heaven would be one where he roams a wide world, sees his enemies driven before him and listens to the lamentations of their women. Mine would be me being a combination of Einstein, Newton, Pascal and others and being a great scienctists and whatnot...or just being myself at 11...whatever...

Thus, everyone would be happy, everyone would be free and things such as 'bad', 'evil' would not really exist. So I guess god would have to be sort of a maintainer of our dreams...and making these dreams possible.
