A thought I’ve been having is that the only thing that might keep the Republicans from a fascist takeover is the Military

I don't buy it. Lieutenants and Captains don't conduct coups, Generals do, and I think the vast majority of officers at the upper ranks understand their oaths well enough.

Yeah only disgraced former generals like Flynn will turn traitor. Any active duty leaders still are honourable and will hold others in the same rank accountable if they turn traitor.

I'm not making any predictions about the US situation specifically, but as a very general point I think Master Sergeant Samuel Doe and Colonel Gaddaffi might disagree with you

(I do suspect the 2024 election will be a bit of a horror show, even if it stops well short of a coup - the Republicans have clearly psyched themselves up to the point where they can convince themselves that whatever dodgy tactics they use are justified, on account of the Democrats 'stealing' the last one)

The truth of how the Repubs are committing political suicide by actively pursuing the support of the nation's racists, supremacists and holier than thou religious extremists and activists is something they are pointedly ignoring, along with how horrific Trump's mismanagement of the nation's security and wellbeing was because owning up to it all is their admitting that their vision of the nation under Trump's rule was/is/will be catastrophic and give them serious doubts about the direction their radicals are taking the party.

Obviously, it would take too much honest and sincere reflective thinking on the part of their rank and file to own up to their being misled by a guy who cheated and conned his way through life. They'd much prefer to go on that emotional rollercoaster ride their leadership is taking them on.

Not some far-flung idea unfortunately, this group of 124 retired generals/admirals formed the
"flag officers for America" and issued this crap replete with all of trumps talking points about
a "stolen" election and "socialism" taking over, https://flagofficers4america.com/ Amazingly,
we had eight years of a Democrat, Obama, and "socialism" didn't happen and no "gun grabbing"
happened either.

matter of fact Obama repealed two gun laws and the result was easier to acquire guns.
Donald banned bump stocks.

I believe it, it's just that every time a Dem gets elected the "gun grabber" moniker gets wheeled out, there's a local Co that makes rifle components, while Obama was in office they had to run 3 shifts to try and keep up with demand.

Point taken that it’s not an absolute.

In the US I think there are simply too many units and too much communication for low level officers or NCO’s to succeed in such a plot. It’s also a huge country where a successful coup in one area could just be ignored elsewhere.

It’s something that needs to be watched for sure tho.

Well. if Trump can get there, he will.
Trump has orchestrated the takeover of state election boards, at least in the states that will matter. And who's to say Trump does not have a plan for the takeover of the military? Because if Trump plans to take the presidency come 2024, Trump will definitely absolutely need the military. Or, should we say, will need ""his loyal military"".

I don't see Donald Trump leaving any stone unturned nor taking any chances in preparation for 2024, not after his experience with 2020. If we know anything about Donald Trump, we know that Donald Trump seldom makes the same mistake twice. This was Trump in business, and this will be Trump in politics.

Believe me, it is not a question of whether or not Trump will gain control of the military on election day 2024, the question is how will he do it?
I think he has a plan.
Trump would never risk a loss should he have no plan.
Come-on.... We're talking Donald Trump here.
The insurrectionist with no regrets, and with no limit to what he can and will do.

As for me? I've booked tickets for Brazil. And takers?

It turns out that is not political suicide. It is an effective tactic, they have gain the support of groups that will reliability vote and are ok with laws the prevent other people from voting.

They will minority rule for a generation to come.

Yeah. 124 flag grade officers is enough to worry me. There have to be more that at least share the sentiment but didn't sign on also. Scary indeed.

Yeah totally illogical to choose Brazil as place to flee. If you want warm weather, why not Mexico. And if Americans want to maintain similar lifestyle, Canada, UK or Australia

I wonder if there is an exception in the UCMJ that covers this? AFAIK the only branch legally allowed to be deployed on US soil is Nation Guard.
