A tale of three X800GTO cards

All three cards tested using ATITool and the "find max" feature.

Card #1 clocked to a horrible 430MHz core (forgot what memory was) but was a Connect3D card that unlocked to 16 pipes. Cost was $145 shipped (still waiting on $25 rebate though).

Card #2 clocked to 600MHz core :Q and 580MHz (x2=1160) memory. It's a Sapphire Ultimate with heatpipe cooler and I had a 120mm fan on one side and an 80mm fan on the other. It probably won't do that well inside a case. PICTURE Cost was $121 shipped as a refurb (looked brand new in box).

Card #3 clocked to 509MHz core and 562MHz memory (1124). It's also a Sapphire, but one with "normal" cooling consisting of a copper heatsink and a fan. Cost $100 shipped as a refurb (lookedd brand new in box).

Card #2 suprised the heck out of me. 3DMark05 scored 6060 with that card clocked at those settings at the 12 pipes (don't think these can unlock) on a socket 754 Sempron 2600+ (1.6GHz 128k cache) overclocked to 2.52GHz. SCREENSHOT

I'm suprised my Connect3D got such a low overclock since other people around here have reported much higher clocks.

Has anyone else here run one of these at 600MHz core?

What's your C3D X800GTO running at?
I got 590/555 quite easily on mine (my bro's gets 585/545).
Both are running with just the stock HSF.

The fireblade gtos usually hit around 620/620. My plain Sapphire gto has gone as high as 640/630 with a moddified zalman cooler. Around 6500 in 3dmark05. The ultimate is likely exactly the same card, except with a passive cooler.

My plain Sapphire GTO2 maxes out at close to 590 / 680.

I ran it at 550 / 600 24/7.

It's up for sale now, as I have no need for that much pooower. I use a little 6600GT now.

EDIT; YOU'RE CHEATIIIING! haha, just kidding.

My OC's were with stock cooler and everything.

I've never heard of any x800 series card ever getting as high as 680 on memory, let alone a gto. Very impressive. Is the card overvolted or on watercooling, something along those lines?

It is luck of the draw. They are tested to work at stock speeds and few won't even do that while a few others will overclock like mad, the rest wind up somewhere in the middle. Better cooling and such can raise the averages for various models, but all the same it comes down to luck of the draw so there is nothing really strange at all about the fact that one of the cards doesn't overclock much.

i thinksome connect 3ds are based off the x800xl core and some off the x800xt core. naturlly, a 40mhz oc is pretty average fro a x800xl, but it would be bad for a x800xt.

The highest i can get my core on my fireblade is 640 but stable is 621. For memory the max is 620 and I can run it stable at 615.

At 621, 615 my 3dmark05 is 6400.

Damn, I thought I had it going ON with my 600MHz overclock (actually it would die somewhere between 605-612MHz, varied between runs) but y'all just had to one-up me a dozen times.

Yeah, I know... luck. Still, mine modded to 16 pipes when people were reporting that the new ones they're getting couldn't be modded. I slapped a passive heatpipe cooler on it and am now running it stock speeds (what's another 30MHz?) but... what's that I hear? Nothing.

What's the difference with the "Fireblade" version? How can I tell?

How can I tell which version core I have? I'll link a pic of my actual Connect3D core. When I took off the original HSF to put on the heatpipe cooler, I slapped that bad boy on my scanner for some high res closeup action.

How does the X800GTO compare to the X800XL as far as stock vs stock specs (clocks, pipelines, core, etc)?

My c3d gto actually says "R423" on the core, so if your's doesnt say anything it might be the R430 from the XL, which would explain the low OC. I've yet to see a R423 or an R480 that cant hit at least 500mhz.

My GTO^2 I had once upon a time hit 550/600 Mem stable. But I ran it at XTPE speeds.

IMO I think its an either or thing with some of the cores. Either 12 pipes and uber clocks, or 16 pipes and more moderate clocks. Try testing it with 12 pipes, see how much higher you get.

Thanks. R423. I don't think I'll bother re-flashing to 12 pipes just to test overclocks. It's good 'nuff passively cooled.
