We're not laughing because he got hurt...it would be just as funny if the guy only got bruised by the incident. We're laughing because it's a ridiculous situation.
I remember the last time I went skiing...it was pretty much the last day of the season. Everyone was skiing back and forth across the big slope, but since we were getting ready to leave, I took a deep breath, pointed my skis straight down the hill, and tucked in. I was going screaming fast, straight down, when I hit a bump a bit too big to handle, and wiped out all over the hill. Skis, poles, and gloves were flying everywhere. The whole hill was laughing, and so was I, as I took the walk of shame to gather all my gear. I had tried to do something beyond my skill, and got owned.
It's not the pain, it's the action, that make it funny. A truck squashing someone against a wall at 5 mph isn't fun to watch, but a huge NASCAR crash is, even though the chances of someone getting killed or hurt are much lower.
