A supercomputer cluster comprised of 1,100 dual-processor G5s

It would be interesting to see how fast it is and how much it costs in the end for the total package.

And what the price / performance score is.

Not bad.
+ cost of admins to congiure/maintain it all = more like $4mill at least...probobly pushing the $6 million mark....

I was about to say the same thing. The G5 sucks compared to the Athlon 64 and other CPUs on the market, let alone the extra cost of what a G5 will run you.
Maybe someone is a apple fanboy and just had to have G5's

sarcasm but but how can that be?? The commerical says it is the "Most powerful personal computer on the planet" /sarcasm

Hahahaha, this is my favorite part of the article

Apple notified some customers this week that their dual processor Power Mac G5 machines would be delayed, as the company shifts its priorities to certain educational institutions

To me this roughly translates into

We realize that you, the cult follower who's always put up with our overpriced, underpowered computers are the reason that we're still around. But really, fvck off. We've found someone more important which means you'll just have to wait. Which you gladly will because that's what we're telling you to do

Great stuff

Please note, I'm not an Apple hater but this just seems like a blatant slap in the face to all the apple cult members.

I'm sure they did much research before they chose which Computer to use and chose the BEST one for their needs. I'm sure they were aware of the existence of the Athlon 64, but they obviously didn't choose it for a reason.

Factor in all the equipments used on each of those systems and all the network equipments use to connect the 1,100 systems. I would imagine those Infiniband switches aren't that cheap either.

Yup and the Cisco gigabit eithernet stuff isn't cheap either and a bunch of other high spec stuff to carry the data.

Good point about them choosing it because it fits their need better. Would be interesting to see what that reason is if we ever find out. If it is better for what they want and such then you can not blame them for using it. As I'll sure as hell be using the best thing with price and performance factored in for a job I needed to do also. No matter what brand it had.

Personally I think its just to be different, and Im sure Apple is giving them some fairly hefty incentives to do it.

The only real reason would be they couldnt find a good source of Opteron PCs, since currently there arent any big hitter mass producing them. But still if not the opteron why not Xeons?

Rumour has it that VT was platform agnostic, but Apple promised a good deal and that they would get them to VT ultra quick. This may mean that they make the top 10 list this year instead of next year.

Also, one wonders how much Altivec is going to be used for this. I dunno if they'll be coding specifically for Altivec, but the newly released XL compilers for Mac OS X dramatically optimize speed for the G5, when compared to GCC 3.3. Even if they don't use Mac OS X, these compilers already exist for Linux so they could just use Yellow Dog Linux for the G5s. Here is the IBM XL performance chart compared to GCC with the G5.

The weird part is that G5 Power Macs are NOT rackmountable. And Apple does not yet have a G5 Xserve. IBM hasn't released its PPC 970 blade servers yet either.

BTW, 1100 dual G5s represents only 1% of Apple's Power Mac orders. They had over 100000 pre-orders of the machines.

Yeah I was giving them the benfit of doubt 😛

If they gave a big discount then why not? I'd take one 😀

Even if it is 1% of its orders then well why do they have to delay some orders if they had the numbers in the first place? That also may be its total orders made but not the a mount of G5's they have in stock or have built up..........

Wow, 1100 Mac processors!! That's got enough processing power to become a potential successor to the TI-83!!

education + apple = major cost break probably
