Website row pits B.C. teen against Microsoft

VICTORIA - A Vancouver Island high school student who does Web site design part-time is locked in a legal battle with one of the biggest companies in the world.

Microsoft Corp. of Seattle, currently valued at $300 billion US, wants Mike Rowe to give up www.mikerowesoft.com as his Internet domain name. The company claims copyright infringement of its name.

If I was Mike, I would sell it to them for One Million 500 Thousand. If they don't like it then I would turn it into a site for porn ads and install a Microsft Haters forum ;)

Through its law firm in Canada, Microsoft has offered him $10 US -- what Rowe paid last August to register the domain.

$10US. Wow, someone's feeling generous. It probably cost them over $1000 to pay the lawyers to write the note that offered him $10.

Microsoft claims that their customers could be confused?! How idiotic would you have to be to go to mikerowesoft.com instead of microsoft.com? Obviously there is something else at play here.

You know, I wonder about that, but then I remember that someone sued McDonald's because she didn't realize that the *Coffee* would be hot and got $2,000,000. People can be pretty damn dumb ;(

Her original judgement was around $3million. The judge cut that down to medical expenses and time off from work. She ended up with around $500,000, most went to medical expenses. She won solely because the McDonalds that she got the coffee from was given repeated warnings by health inspectors that their coffee was to hot for human consumption. They were held liable for her injuries because of that.
