A stupid n00b (to DDR ram) question....

I just bought a GIG of DDR400 ram. Will this work OK with a CPU that uses a lesser FSB speed?

I'm looking to put it in a DFI Lan Party Mother Board which as I understand allows you to set the ram speed separate from the CPU FSB. (I could be wrong...)

Edit: I have a B core 1700+ T-Bred and a B core 2100+ T-Bred and I was thinking about using the 1700 in the Lan Party (unless I can get a good deal with the M/B and a Barton combo)

it will work ok, it will just go to the correct speed assumign your divider is set at 1:1 so if your fsb is 333 than your ram will be at 333

what are your system specs, you might be able to get help form others if oyu post system specs

I haven't built the system yet.

I'm looking at a DFI Lan Party NF2 Ultra B or a DFI INFINITY, and either the 1700+ or the 2100+.

From looking around at Overclockers.com it seems people are getting MAD speeds out of the 1700+ T-Breds, so I'm going to try that. (unless my offer on the Lan Party with a 2500 Barton is excepted ;) )

when you overclock, having a CPU with a lower bus speed becomes a moot point. You would simply run synch and overclock the bus speed while reducing the multiplier factor. Right now I belive your system is running

2:3 which is 133 : 200

What you want is:

1:1 which is 200:200

The stock multiplier for the 1700+ is 11X. What you should do first is reduce the multiplier from 11 to 10. Then increase the bus speed to 200. That will give you 2.2ghz which the 1700+ should do with 1.7v (give or take).

If you desire you can use an even lower multiplier to overclock the bus speed past DDR400 (which is a common practice)

I had my 2600+ Mobile to 261 x 10 (DDR520) on my NF7-S

Yeah thanks!

I've been overclocking for years using SDRAM, I just wasn't sure about DDR since I have never used it before. I've used PC133 SDRAM in systems with a 100 FSB and never had a problem. I just wasn't sure is DDR would behave the same. ;)
