Hi Everybody,
Here is a weird problem. When I upgraded to WinXP, all my theme icons, background, cursors, etc. worked except for sounds.

However, sound events did not totally stop working. The sounds associated with menus only work when I select from the Start menu. Isn't that weird?

Now for the final wrinkle. I installed SP1 and was having problems, so I installed XP fresh from the CD (previous install was an upgrade from Win98SE). Now, all themes worked--sound and all. For reasons I won't go into, I had to Ghost back to the upgrade. Now my sounds don't work again--except as mentioned above.

Does anyone have a clue why this is happening and how to fix it? I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem.

Thanks.

I totally agree about the fresh install.

Perhaps you should mention these "reasons you won't go in to".

Back up what you need and just do the format and install.

"Reasons I won't go in to:" Basically, they are boring details. After SP1 install, I my OpenGL games (Serious Sam 2 and RTCW) were screwing up. Also, my system was freezing up and I couldn't figure out why.

My hardware is kind of dated: Abit KT7-Raid, GeForce 2 GTS.

I've done so many little changes and updates to programs that I was hoping I could avoid wiping the whole drive and starting over.
