This is the first time I've had this situation. Anyway, I'm enrolled into one of my masters courses. A student there is actually deaf. He has a personal translater that sits in front of him doing sign language in the middle of the class. She speaks for him as well as he asks questions.

He's working on his PhD. Kind of interesting.

That's pretty cool. My SO has a cousin who is deaf and he's a very interesting guy. I don't know any sign language but we're able to communicate pretty well - enough to have a decent conversation.

I guess he must have gotten bored with being a pinball wizard.

I had the same situation in my Calc II class. A translator would show up to every session to translate what the professor said and taught. Could you imagine trying to translate calculus into sign language or trying to understand it from sign language?

I had a guy in some of my Master's classes who was like 98% deaf. He had a cochlear implant, so you could talk to him a bit outside of having his translator in class. But man was that kid a huge asshole. I knew a guy who got stuck sharing a house with him through his professional frat and the deaf kid literally took his clothes out of the washing machine while it was running (read soggy and soapy) and put them on the ground so he could run his own laundry.

Translating is the same as speaking so if you understood what was going on in spoken english it would be the same in sign. I have been a translator for years and the higher up the class the harder it can be to translate.

Wow that'd suck.

We need something that does like the opposite of most GPS units and instead of text to speech, we need speech to text translators that can work in real time.

I broke my right hand skiing a week or so before I started Calc 3. I had to take notes left handed for probably half the semester. Good times!

I'll submit that the REAL wizard could only be determined in a cutt-throat competition. Maybe the dumb and blind one pwned the merely deaf guy in pinball and was like, "pwnz0red! Buttsehks!" Thus he's enrolled in a masters program.

That's kind of the question I had. I imagine he gets a reduced fee since he is under ADA but i imagine she dosen't pay anything as she is his translator
