A strange thing I just discovered

When I copy files from my 120GB Maxtor to a new Seagate 120GB, it took at least 2 hrs to copy 15GB. Today I copied the files from the 120GB seagate to a new 200GB seagate, it only took 20 min.

All 3 drives are IDE drives. and both old and new are on the same IDE channel. Why the difference in transfer speed?

I'd check to make sure one of the drives isn't stuck in a PIO mode. Also, if the Maxtor was highly fragmented that'll slow things down. Still, two hours is pretty extreme.

I have a 3-4 year old 5400rpm maxtor that's been running pretty much 24/7 since I got it. The major manufacturers are all pretty much the same, some people tout Seagate's 5 year warranty as a guarantee of higher quality, but it could be no more than a publicity thing, ie. maybe they're willing to replace a few more drives than the other guys in exchange for giving the impression of quality. Price / speed / interface should figure more into a purchase decision than brand for hard drives. Temperature plays a much bigger role; hot drives have a far lower lifespan.
