A Steam Crysis

What a crappy weekend it has been.

I was almost done with Crysis. I was on the aircraft carrier and the final baddie was coming my way. But instead of finishing, I took a break. Before starting back up again, I clicked on Steam's "check for video driver updates". MISTAKE.

Well, Steam told me I didn't have the latest drivers, so I updated. And that's when the disaster began. After updating to the latest ATI drivers, Crysis wouldn't launch (nothing but a black, blank screen). The only way to get out was ctrl-alt-delete and immediately upon doing that I got a message that said there was a problem with Crysis.

So I took the drastic measure of completely wiping out all of my Steam games and even the Steam client. I deleted all the video drivers and reinstalled (outside of steam). I reinstalled Steam. I re-downloaded Crysis. The problem persisted.

As a last resort, I tried running Crysis directly from the games folder (not through Steam). This worked except it ran it in windowed mode which I could not get out of. I then tried to run it through Steam and it works, but.......

I now cannot run the game in 1920 x 1080. I could before. Does anyone know why I no longer can choose that setting in the options? Is there a way to fix this limitation?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a driver issue. I'd ask the mods to move this to "Video Cards and Graphics", people probably know more there.

Try installing your monitor driver if you want Crysis to pick up 1920x1080. Should work.

Did you scroll down in the Resolution Options list? (1920 x 1xxx option is always out of view until you do). I've seen so many people missing this very obvious step!

FYI - it technically isn't Steam's fault; they just push the drivers out as being available whenever ATI says so.

Why would you want to update drivers during a game. Finish playing then update, know what I'm sayin'?

I do now. Yes, I'm learning the hard way. Thing is, Crysis was working fine on very high settings for me too. I should have just left it alone. But instead I saw the new update and went "oooh cool". Frack!

And yes, I've tried scrolling down. It does not work. 1920 x 1080 is not listed in the options.

I have not tried to reinstall my ASUS monitor driver......that's a good recommendation.....thanks!

Why would you want to update drivers during a game.

Because 99% of the time it doesn't cause a single problem? At any given time I'm probably in the middle of playing about 10 different games. No kidding. I also update my drivers on a regular basis. (I'm very thorough however, I use Driver Sweeper and everything.)

OP should've backed up his game saves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but like many other games, Crysis's save files aren't stored in the Steam folder. Rather, they're kept somewhere in the My Documents folder in Windows. I can't imagine how updated video drivers would conflict with anyone's saves.

Reinstalling the monitor driver might do the trick. By default, Windows uses a "Generic PnP Monitor" driver for displays, but if you check in Windows update you might see an ASUS Certified driver in the "optional" downloads. Just a thought.

I had the exact same issue. Change the resolution manually in the config file in steam to 1080P.

problem solved..

there is an issue with crysis and warhead where the scaling options need to be reset for the game to look right.

I never update drivers unless I'm having a very specific issue, and if I see that in the release notes this very specific issue is addressed in said update.

This. I've gone considerable time without updating a video driver if I'm having no problems.

I did this. In fact, I still have my saved files in My Documents (on my C: drive, Steam and associated files are on my D: drive).

However, the new instal of Crysis does not point to those saved game files or profile or directory. I cannot figure out where Crysis is now storing my save game files (I set up a new profile and played a few minutes just for the sole purpose of having Steam save a saved game file....but I can't find it).

But that's a lesser concern. I enjoyed Crysis and if I have to start over, it's not a huge deal.

I read about this. However I cannot find a system.cfg file anywhere in steam (I've searched the steamapps directory with no luck). What is the file name that you updated to accomplish this? Where did you find it?

Ok, I'm still stuck. There is no such thing as a video driver for the ASUS VH236H monitor that I have (apparently it just uses the basic Windows 7 pnp driver).

I've scoured the crysis folder in steamapps and I do not see any configuration file to edit.

This is pissing me off.

It might not be in your steamapps folder. Like save files, config files are also commonly stored in My Documents. Check there.

Also, since you're using Steam, do the usual Right-Click > Properties > Local Files > "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

Dude, seriously try harder to scroll.

I had this same problem.

Are you actually grabbing the scroll bar and sliding it down?

Why are you in every damn Crysis thread there is? Seriously....it seems like your obsessed with them. Do you have to defend every thread when you see crysis pop up? Do you have stock in the company or something? Anyway, here's the real shocker. Crysis 2 sucks compared to the original and Warhead.Oh! The horror!

Perhaps he frequents Crysis threads because people like you with nothing to add to the conversation simply jump in to bash the game pointlessly?

I cannot try any harder. I've grabbed the scroll bar slided it down. I've used the scroll wheel on my mouse. I've used the arrow keys.

There simply is not an option larger than 1680 x 1050.

a friend of mine had this problem on another game..she had to go into an .ini file and set her resolution to what she wanted.

I like Crytek as developers.

At least I add to the thread, instead of bashing it.

You have like less than 200 posts and you are already trolling.

Just do a search on your HDD for it...

Ok. First off, thanks to everyone who offered suggestions -I appreciate all the help!

I was able to find the configuration file and update it using Notepad and now can run in 1920 x 1080 with no problems.

My primary problem was that I was searching for a system.cfg file. This was based on something I found using a Google search of the problem. However, that must be for the standalone version of Crysis.

The Steam version of Crysis saves a configuration file as game.cfg (not system.cfg). And it saves it in your My Documents/My Games/Crysis folder (which for me is on my C: drive while Steam and the game files are on D:). Basically, LessThanDan nailed the issue (thanks!).

Big-time learning experience with this issue, but I'm better off for it.

Now, on to whipping some North Korean and extra-terrestial butts....
