Toyota MR2 Or any Used Lotus.

anything with V6 power?

A 200HP 4 cylander lotus will out accelarate most 6 cylander and some 8 cylander cars. I would look at how much the car weighs. A lightweight car will do several things (vs a heavier more powerfull car):
  1. Accellarate quicker
  2. Handle Better
  3. Get better mileage from a gallon of Gas/Petrol
  4. Stop Qucker
  5. Overall it is much better to drive

Personaly I would take a 200hp 4 cylander car that weighs 2000 pounds over a 400HP 8 cylander car that weighs 4000 pounds any day of the year. Better milage, more fun, faster, name it and it is better in a light car.

Any BMW that costs 5k or less will be high milage and will be doomed to the repair shop. Big $$$$ or ££££ to fix.

Alternate suggetion is a Cleo V6

an Jag XJS V12 are cheap enough... (and horribly unreliable)

Any ideas?

Fixed.

Oh and, get a motorcycle.

BTW-Old 5 series BMWs aren't very fast. How old are we talking here anyway? Late 90s 530i? Or 80s model (which are total dogs). For $5k I'm guessing it's at least 10 years old.

Since you're in the UK, any 91-95 turbo should be boosting 12psi from the factory, you don't have to fiddle with it like us poor yanks do. I  mine, her name is Vera.

I was in a 530I? I cant remember, early 90's. It had the gangster look about it and had a straight 6. When my mate put his foot down, there sheer torque was amazing, it just drags you forward.

Maybe a V8 firebird (70 ish). Iv seen them go for less then 2k.

peugeot 206 or some sort of alfa.

I drove my mums 1.1 206 before she got her honda civic, that 206 was horrid.

True, but the 1.9 GTi was a pretty damned good car. The handling was good, the power was great, and there's no shortage of spares.

Cheap to run, too.
